This comes up from time to time and I'm curious. I use a digital scale for most of my gear. For my levers, I adjust to 30+% at strike. Stars are 25-30%. This is set and or checked on the boat while heading out. I have had a few comment on how "heavy" my drag feels, then the conversation starts. I did the same thing once I started using a scale. 26lbs of drag on 80lb "feels" like a lot.

Damn, it was supposed to be a poll....

For those of you brave enough... If you just do the hand test method, would you be willing to grab a scale and check it? Then, actually post your results? Pound test is not an issue. Fishing large fish on light line is the same for 4lb as it is with 80lb. In other words, 8 oz's of drag on 4lb is just as bad as 10lbs of drag with 80lb.

I do it the same way with a digital scale...25-30% usually regardless of star/lever. Sometimes I go a little lighter, but not very often.

there's a little star shaped thing on the right side of the reel, i beat on it with a pair of dykes untill it stops moving, then its ready.

i like the pulling the line out with your hand technique.. seems to work pretty well. most of the reels nowadays offer so much drag that you will never use it.

Same way for 35+ years. Pull it by hand, than play with it during the fight.
