Having worked in the restaurant business in the past,I learned some things most people don't know. The waitstaff in the ones I worked at,were required to share their tips with the others behind the scenes. The cooks, prep staff, bussers, and dishwashers all got a small percentage of each waitpersons tips. It takes more than just the servers to make your dining experience a pleasant one. So while you may tip the server well because they made your dining experience great,or not,it is the culmination of a group effort. Let that sink in BEFORE you go out to eat next time. Then tip accordingly based on the overall quality of your dining experience. Just remember, what you hand to,or leave your server,is not what they walk out with.

So how does this information concern me as a customer? Am I now supposed to tip extra on top on my average 20% tip, to cover the bus boy, dishwashers...etc?

If you plan on frequently going to a particular restaurant or going on a certain boat repeatedly then tipping well should be a no brainer...

I was simply adding additional info for perspective. Nothing more and nothing less. Take from it what you wish...

I was a dishwasher in chain restaurants, bussed and waited tables in chain restaurants, waited tables, barbacked and bartended in high-end restaurants and nightclubs, and I have deck handed on fishing boats and fishing yachts. Tips are great, and always appreacted, but I feel a tip is earned, not given. Been stiffed a few times, and tipped hugely many times.

Tip what you feel is appropriate, and what you can afford.

I drop in for the first time since I don't know when and see a multiple page thread about tipping.

What happened...did the thread about the best surface iron color finally get taken down?

Man...what the fuck is this shit. Why so complicated?
    1. Tip is earn....not given
If they, he/she earned then give....if not then for shit, they don’t deserve it. And I don’t give a fuck how many fish they caught.
    2. If they are too busy helping their buddies “dead head, pin head or dick head” and don’t give a shit about you...
Then why the fuck are you still worry about not tipping them. You must be really rich or really dumb.
Please don’t let the oh they work really hard all day....I m pretty sure y’all work pretty hard just to be on that fishing boat.

Not weird Tips are reported to the IRS as your wages Thus you pay IRS and state taxes on those tips. A one time gift under 5000 dollars is not required to be reported as income and thus you do not have to pay income taxes on that money.

Why not just leave an amount that expresses your level of gratification for the service provided? If the dudes are working hard and taking care of you, hook them up, if not don't. I don't see what the big deal is? I could literally care less how much they make a trip or hour or whatever. Not relevant. How bitchin were they. Bitchin = fat tip. Good = decent. Not good = probably not so great. In my opinion if their service hurt them a bit, my tip will hurt me a bit. Game respect game!
