My wife and I will arrive in Panama City on an evening flight in mid April. We are renting a car, and will be in Panama for 2 weeks, one week touring around and one week fishing. I have never been to Panama, and have heard that driving in Panama City can be kind of crazy, especially after dark...

Does anyone have any recomendations for hotels that are near the airport or at least easy to drive to for someone half brain dead from traveling?

I have not stayed in Panama City personally. I would recommend that you contact John Delacruz at Panama Sportfishing Lodge for his recommendations.

Panama Sport Fishing Lodge

Or pm him directly through this site as he is a sponsor.

ps. haha I have been to Pinedale/Lander/Jackson many times. Panama will be an interesting change :D.

The airport is is not very close to the city. Probably about 20-30 min depending on traffic.
There are a few nice hotels in the city. I find that Hotel Veneto is the most fun. It has a casino and is in the middle of all the action.

Driving in Panama City is NOT easy. I would get a cab from the airport as the car rental places might be closed or the people working there will be drunk. Cab from airport to Veneto will run ya less than $20.

Rooms at the veneto will run ya about $100 a night. If that is too pricey for you I can refer you to a couple other ones that are about $20 bucks a night or $5 an hour. The cheap hotels aren't too bad, and they even come with free crabs!

A double at the Veneto will cost you about $165 per night total with taxes. Less expensive downtown hotels include the Ambassador Suites, Executive and Marabella. The hotels near the airport are boring and in the middle of nowhere. Take a taxi from the airport to a downtown hotel where there are good restaurants, etc. You can also reserve a "VIP" transfer service from Starlite Travel ([email protected]: 011-507232-6406) where they will have a young lady meet you as you get off the plane, walk you by the long line at customs directly to the lounge for a drink and relaxation as they process your clearance papers, get your luggage and then meet you at the van ready to go to your hotel.

I've made 46 trips to Panama and I still don't get the street layout. Panama City is full of one-way, mis-alligned streets and the drivers, although not as bad as Ticos, are pretty cut-throat and lean on the horn alot. If you're going to rent a car (which I have done before without a problem) I would certainly start off in the daytime (especially on the weekend with less traffic) and study the map. Another option is that most car rentals will offer drivers for about $20 per day and they can accompany you around the city or wherever you may need them.

Get on the internet, get tour guide. If there for the first time, it's much easier to pay the $'s and enjoy the ride. When there, do yourself a favor and stay on Taboga for a night. Great little island.

I also recommend the "Veneto". Very nice and entertaining with many good places to eat very close.
I do not recommend driving in Panama City.
Panama is awesome and hope you have a nice trip.

Driving in Panama is fine if you are a traveler and have driven other places..I rent car and drive from the airport to Chiriqui no problem. I would agree that you should not be driving at night especially in Panama City,,,to easy to get lost. The Veneto is very nice and close to a lot.

If you are looking for close to the airport just sleeping kindo place the Riande Airport Hotel is 5 minutes from the airport and is decent for around $100 a night. Panamacity is very busy and the hotels are expensive. Once you get out of town it gets more affordable

Not sure where you are planning to visit, but if your taking the wifey, make sure you take her to Boquete' one night at least ...it's 45 minute ride from David and we always stay at the Panamonte hotel which is around $100 a night and food if fantastic it's in the mountains, so it is cool and very "cultural" "artsy" type of "romantic" place..your wife will love it.

The Las Rocas resort near David on La Barquetta beach is great and I think also areound a $100 (high season in April) it's right on the beach and has a great pool etc. It's about 30 minutes from David.

Bocas Del Toro is a cool town on the carribean side of Chiriqui and would be a cool place to stay but if your driving it's 3 hours from David I believe..might be a stretch on a week long trip.

Have fun! Panama is awesome and while you need to use common sense, it is nothing like driving in Mexico etc.

Thanks for all the info, I will definately not be driving in Panama City at night!

I have rented cars in Belize and all over Mexico, so I am not too worried other than the urban areas (which I plan to basically avoid). I am traveling with my wife (a die-hard angler not afraid of a little fish or elk blood). We are planning on spending 3 nights in Gamboa, and 4 nights in Boquete, then 6 nights at Paradise lodge.

I Cannot wait, the tropics will be a welcome change from the snow and mud season here!!

Curtis, I think you are referring to the Las Olas Beach Resort near David. That's a pretty nice place just be careful to not step on the huge number of toads that hop around at night.

Dave, by the way, I'll be going to Panama March 17-25 to fish on the Coral Star mothership and will be doing pretty much what I advised you regarding the VIP transfer, Veneto, etc. except will fish Gatun Lake one day and fly to David instead of drive.

Gatun has a big population of small peacock bass (a 4 lb. fish is considered a top catch for the day). If your guide has live minnows onboard he'll chum up a bunch and you can start with live bait and then go to small crankbaits, jigs, flys, etc. but keep them small. There are big snook and tarpon in Gatun but they are harder to find. The biggest tarpon I've seen was last year at about 80 lbs. (all I had was a 6lb. outfit for bass) and the snook average 3-8 lbs. You're better off trolling swimming plugs for those. Don't forget to tell your guide that you want to see some monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, etc. and he should know where to go to get some up-close photos. View my BD posts under "Gatun Lake, Panama" for photos.

Tony,

When are you flying to David? I will be on the 4:45 flight from Allbrook to David on Friday the 19th. Would be cool to meet you. My family and I are on our way to see my parents Rex and Connie Hudson, partners at Hooked On Panama/Aqua Adventures Panam Lodge in Limones. I know you went last season and read your article in Marlin Magazine about the lodge. We really appreciate the promotion.

If we don't see you on the plane I'll see at Montuosa!

Wes.

Wes,

We're on the 9:15 a.m. flight from Albrook-David on the 19th. We'll be at the Veneto on the 17 & 18 and at the new Hotel Ciudad de David (774-3333) on the 19th. Look us up if by chance you are nearby. My cell in Panama: 6659-0190. Your parents were great to fish with and I believe I got your mom's photo in Marlin. Say hello to everyone and anxious to go back to Burica.

Thanks Tony,

We are on the late flight to David on the 19th but will see you on the water. I will make sure Captain Oliver checks in with Pesca Panama so we can track those cows down and all go home with some sashimi and good memories.

Did you happen to catch the last two episodes of Monster Fish with Dennis Braid on the Outdoor network? First episode filmed last March at the lodge (H.O.P.) they were catching some nice big yf and then the second episode was roosters and Cuberras. They got my group pretty pumped for next week. Have a good trip if we don't see ya there...

David, what boat is Capt. Macho on now?

Chris, I agree that at night the Veneto takes on an "adult" look with street girls outside and some working girls inside around the casino and bars. We got in last night with very few girls around but Friday through Sunday it "picks up" (pardon the pun). Sabrina and I like the girl scene (adds to the discussions) but to each their own. There are many family-oriented hotels available as you mentioned. On the other hand, it's not like they're going to walk up and grab your children. It just may require some explanation.

David, the only boat names I use (because I forget the boat names) to call on the radio are "Macho-Macho-Macho", "Bartolo-Bartolo-Bartolo", etc. Works for me.
