Being a relatively new fisherman, I decided to do a bunch of nerding out on hook-types to try to educate myself better. Previously, I didn't really know what the differences were or different usages. I read about circle hooks, egg hooks, octupus hooks, o'shaugnessy hooks, siwash hooks, worm hooks, split shot hooks, and more...

The type of fishing I do is: rockfish, kelp lines for bass, roaming YT, 'cuda, and paddy hunting a bit further offshore for dorado, YT, or very occasional tuna. Any lures I use are pre-rigged. I don't rig my own lures with hooks. Except plastics, which I put on lead-head hooks.

I came away from my reading thinking I really only need two kinds of hooks. Circle hooks for rockfishing, or maybe fly-lining bait in a rod holder, and O'Shaugnessy hooks for everything else.

    Am I wrong?

Use the Mustad 94151 and call it good for the stuff you're after. I don't like the 9174 O'Shaugnessy hooks... too sticky with the tip curved out. I like the slightly turned in tip of the 94151... Mustad calls them beak hooks.

I've found the octopus hook seems to lip hook bass. I'm not sure why but it makes it easier to release the bass unharmed.

Do not use circles on rockfish.

Ever try to get one of those pos out of one of those spiny bastards?

I second the mustad 94151 advice.
A box of 1's and 2/0 is all you will ever need.
