Homemade molds for plastics - RTV silicon or resin/epoxy?

For anyone that makes their own molds. What are the pros and cons of RTV vs resin/epoxy?

I can only speak to RTV. I used to pour vinylester pieces in rtv. The stuff I poured had quite a bit of detail in the face.
Rtv allowed you to get all the detail that was in the mold.

Each allow advantages depending on the application. If you want "production" numbers... and are smart in how the molds are made... resin / epoxy could do great numbers.

BUT.... as SEALSKINNER stated... RTV could provide higher levels of detail... and intricacies. Remember.... its flexible .. and can stretch a little while your removing the molded item.

Advantages either way. You need to decide... for fun.... or money. Either way....Good Luck.

Check out Larry Dahlbergs website. ALUMILITE AND others there for mold making and lure making... has many videos.

Really clean molding can only be achieved with the use of a degassing machine. It mixes your preferred product under vacuum and without stirring, so no bubbles.
