I've got the new 400 paired with a Phenix 909H. Haven't stuck anything on it yet but it throws a big popper a country mile!

Hoping to get my ass kicked by a brute BFT on that rig here one day soon...

yes Carl its a pws909mh rated 15-40 line and thanks so it would be better paired with the lexa400

thanks Rob yeah I like the lexa 400
it works well and for sure I will have problems hooking a brute fish with that lenght of a rod on it but I bet it will be fun, you know sometimes you need the lighter stuff to get bit

Don't make the mistake of going light leader to throw poppers. 100# bite leader on 50-65# braid will get bit if they will bite at all. Its a reaction bite, not a stealthy live bait presentation.

If you also want a more balanced combo get the Lexa 400 HD in 7:1...the 8:1 is gonna be painful on a 9' rod...I would put an 8:1 on no more than an 8' rod.

    Your boat!
Just my opinion but You guys must be crazy/stupid to be going after the Bluefin showing, up to 100#, with a 25#, 9' rod with a limited capacity, single speed, hi ratio level wind!
    BTW, PSX908MH is 15-40, the PSX909H is 20-60.
When I was young and stupid enough to go for bluefin on the long rod, I would have at least chosen the PSX909XHJ, 30-80 and a 2speed reel!

No they are not the same size Lexa is a 400 size where the Tranx is a 500 size. Check the specks for line capacity and you'll see.

How does the Lexa400 compare in size to a Tranx?

Lexa 400 is ~16 oz and the Tranx is ~22 oz.

Look at the height of the spools, the Tranx is a much bigger reel. Not as ideal for most local fishing in a typical year, imo. More of a large Tuna/Wahoo reel.

I have my Lexa 400 on a phenix 909xh and it throws irons and poppers like a dream. Just picked up a tranx HG and phenix 909xhj. Difference between the 909xh and 909xhj is a stiffer tip to throw heavier and bigger jigs. For the Lexa 400 I would get the 909xh. Plenty of back bone to pull on big fish and throw irons and poppers

How do you like the Lexa with the 909xhj? I have a Lexa 400hd and am debating between 909h, 909xh, or 909xhj. It will be mainly surface iron and popper.

Great combo for the surface iron. I haven't tried the 909xh or 909h. I have used the psw869h with the Lexa and liked it too. In fact, I got a wahoo on that setup last year.

How do you have your lead setup? I have 50lb spectra straight to the top and was looking at 40/50 FC leader.

I fish straight 50# braid to a top shot of 3 foot 50# on th Lexa. The tranx is straight 65# braid to a top shot of. 50#. Works well for me. Have caught wahoo yellowtail and tuna on the setups with bombs jigs and poppers.
