I've been teaching my son what Ive learn in field and continue to learn every trip we set boots on the ground since he's been 3years old.
We started our D16 hunt Saturday morning accompanied with my good friend who shares same ethics as we do.
We began the morning in a new area for us all. Looks promising after catching two doe below us walking a drainage.
Three hours of spotting go blank but know he'll show on another day with plenty of sign
We moved off and set camp for friend and my son. I on the other hand had a commitment with work Sunday.
After eating lunch and son finishing biology and math homework we set out for an evening hunt that blanks us.
Waking back to truck, with a nursing back and numbing feet, my ankle gives out and knee rotates. It doesn't look pretty.
We get back to camp and I crawled the truck home.
Serious pain all night, the alarm fires off atv5:30. I can't stand, wife flips light on and sees a melon for a knee. I'm now being direct to suit up, we're going to ER.
Im reluctant as I need to be at work.
Well that ain't going to happen.
I sent the boys a text, "where you headed".
A few options we discussed Saturday which they responded to the area we talked about. I gave em an update of my situation as my wife escorted me to Kaiser at about 7am. That was followed with a nice picture of my son wishing me well as they wait the morning out.
10 minutes later my phone rings, "Dad I got one".
Wow, that's the second time he has filled his tag without dad at his side.
Of course this would not have been possible without my good friend Oscar as a mentor. I'm completely humbled on both accounts. One, my son with his accomplishments (4 tags filled in 5 years at 16yrs. old). And moreover with Oscar stepping in.
The plan was for Oscar to fill his tag first as we all agreed. He blanked last year and his pops my miss next weeks engagement with a week long planned hunt/camp, our annual tradition due to health.
I'm blessed in so many ways and am truly humbled with my friendship and his unselfishness.
Thank you Oscar, you're a true friend and good man.
Congratulations son, dad will heal up and we'll be back out there soon.

Great job. Always nice to see the new generation of hunters out there.

Oscar sounds like a keeper of a hunting buddy.
