starting a new project and could use some help to answer the basic rod building questions:
  • What is the optimal inner diameter ID of the hole in foam grips for my heavy saltwater Calstar blank
  • what size hole is optimal to properly fit my fishing rod blank
  • what is the best tip and trick to slide Hypalon grips down the shaft (add Rubber Cement for lubrication for your search)
UPDATE: Doug at Fishermen's Landing Tackle told me the ID inner diameter for:
the top fore grip hole is 1/2 inch
the bottom grip hole is 11/16th inch

this appears to be the correct sizing information as it applied and stretched and fit my blank as desired

my project custom rod build: Calstar Grafighter 765L 6.5' rated 30-80#

Does this look like the preferred size for the Hypalon foregrip or should the ID be smaller, what measurement is preferred?

Fishermen's Landing tells me they sell the real Hypalon material

inner diameter ID 1/2 inch

outer diameter OD 1-3/16 inches

Thanks

How big is the blank ? If that is real hypalon it should stretch,i put it in the microwave for a minute or two to help it.The stuff i get at Squidco has to be a real close fit, that stuff will not open up or stretch even when warmed up good.

last time I used Fishermen's 'real' hypalon and it stretched a lot - I recall Squidco sells VARMAC

it went on fine and smooth using rubber cement trick I found on Salty Dog

it slides down and stops at 42" mark as pictured

my gut says the ID hole could be a little smaller

That will go. I might use a 3/8” I’d for the rear and 1/2” for the fore. Lots of rubber cement If it’s a hot day and I use paste epoxy on fore and rear to boot.

I believe Einar ment 3/4" for the rear 1/2 " for the fore with epoxy at the final position Use rubber cement and it will slide in place easily.

Take a measurement (ID of grip and OD of blank) at where it will actually end up before you put glue on anything just to make sure.

I did (3/4 For the rear grip not 3/8) I appreciate that Don!
