Looking for some info on what reel to match up to my Calstar 196-7s 7ft 10-25lb spinning rod. The outfit will be used on the local piers down here in Socal. I want to purchase the Penn Spinfisher V reel but need help with size! The sizes I'm looking at are 4500, 5500, 6500 Please let me know your thoughts on which is the best fit for the rod! I will be fishing mainly with frozen bait.. Thanks!

Looking to fish with 15# mono for Mackeral, Bonito, Barracuda, etc? A 5500 holds 240yds of 15# which should be plenty.

Yes, I will be fishing for mainly those species and using 15lb mono with possible braid backing! The 5500 was my first choice of reel to match up but wasn't sure if it was to big or to small for the rod!

I go the opposite and use a short leader so the knot doesn't go through the guides. 50# spectra is the diameter of 12# mono so with that as backing you could fish a 40# leader with that reel and have enough capacity.

Right. But he said topshot so I figured he wanted to cast mono. I personally go braid to 2' fluorocarbon leader.
