This is not a fishing report, but there is not a discussion thread for Hawaii, so I figured I'd post my question here. I am a mostly "Caucasian" man with a little hawaiian. My grandfather, moms dad, is full hawaiian and my mothers maiden name is most obviously hawaiian. I look nothing like a hawaiian but have always liked the fact that a little of it runs in my blood. Now to the question, I am very heavily tattooed and a lot of it is heritage and family related. My mom always says that I have more of my "white" side represented, and I actually think it bothers her. I am thinking of getting "haole" in my back piece that represents my heritage. I wanted to see honest answers from you guys since I don't really know how offensive or ignorant it will be seen... My grandpa has called me haole for many years and it would be sort of tribute to him as well. But the last thing I want to do is be on the beach either here at the mainland or in Hawaii and offend anyone. Also it is meant to be relatively funny and not serious... I know I may get some odd responses but I figured I'd ask before I offend anyone with my body:D

I have wanted to get "keiki o ke kai" across my shoulders for many years.
What about "haole o ke kai"?

On the mainland, who knows what haole means? I've used the word haole to refer to my friends, not as an insult. Unfortunately, you'll offend someone no matter what you do. It seems everyone has a right to get into your business. 'nuff said.

I see haole as being very similar to the word gringo or guero .....

He called you Haole to needle you I think. Hawaiians call white people " Haole" . In the surf community it's like " hay Haole don't take my wave". For you being 1/4 Hawaiian(which is cool) you definitely are NOT a Haole. I wouldn't get the tattoo of Haole. Maybe your grandpas last name or something which represents your Hawaiian heritage. Lots of my friends who are Hawaiian have their name across their back or on the inside of their bicep. Hope this helps clear up the Haole perspective.(edit- Hawaiians may call "whiter" Hawaiians Haole and that's where the term may have originated from. I'm editing because I didn't want to seem naive, most Cali surfers only know "Haole" thru movies or magazines. So that is what you need to find out, where does " Haole" originate from. )

I think the actual definition of haole is "short of breath" or something like that........

Haole refers to a white person its the word before or after that determines it's meaning!

Thanks for the responses. He always told me that even though I have some hawaiian the white side is obviously dominant. And that's what he said was what they called the "lighter skinned" guys on the island. Appt is Friday to complete the whole back and ribs. Gonna go for it. I think it's funny. Fuck it.

Exactly the kind of reply I was lookin for! Hapa haole means half though right? And I'm not half and look like I have none at all. How would you say "mostly?" Like I'm mostly haole... I don't have a lot of room left though so it has to be short :D

Haole means-no breath- like you said.....because foreigners in the 1700's didn't do the ha. Unfortunately, now it basically means white people.....I hear it as positive, like a simple description...my haole friend, this haole chick..... but somehow i feel like the elephant in the room that just took a dump in the kitchen floor when I hear it, especially when it's negative.. "This F'n Haole...." ...It definitely has some negativity with it since all foreigners became all white people...Even though Weren't not all imperialists....I guess there are other words for chinese, mexican, filipino, japanese, etc..... But I try not to use spik, pake, jap, flip or kanaka (human being) as a descriptive name for someone.... Just my opinion. Good luck with your tattoo, if it's a positive thing for you then go for it!
