Happy New Years to all on Bloodydecks.

New job with lots of travel, home renovations and lots of other excuses, but I had not been out in nearly four months. A couple of attempts were also aborted due to weather.

Finally set everything aside and got underway from Haleiwa at 0200 this morning to catch akule. Had plenty in the live well and on ice in a cooler as well. At first light we headed to J buoy. Made several passes with bait, but no one was hungry. Set lures and headed to II. Made several passes there as well with no luck.

Reset the lures and headed back to the harbor. About 7 miles from the harbor took a knockdown on the port corner that didn't stick, followed shortly by a solid hookup on the starboard rigger. The fish was making a strong run so we bumped the drag up to the button and the fish didn't slow down. Eventually took 400 yards on the initial run. Cleared lines and got to work. The fish did not jump and went deep, so we were hopeful for a tuna, but got a 160-180 pound marlin in the boat.

Thanks Roy for a great day on the water.

It will not be another four months before my boat gets wet again.

    Chuck

I'm a little slow getting these pictures resized properly. The purple headed lure took the initial hit. The blue one got the fish in the boat.

Welcome back Chuck from that ugly work (4 letter word) abyss. Good goin' on the akule but more importantly good goin' on the blue; those buggas are a pretty rare commodity these days.

Happy New Year to you and your's!!!

    Cheers
    Pat

Thanks for all of the comments. We did under estimate the weight - the fish tipped the scales at 180# with the head and tail cut off and gutted.

Good luck to everyone on their next trip.
