25 years ago I dove with my dad. I remember asking him if he ever saw sharks around the islands. We never saw any Sharks, but we dove in the morning and afternoon hours. While I hate california sea lions, I wouldn't be mad if more GW came around the islands or found decapitated sea dogs.

I recall the bravado and stupidity of my youth in the 70's when we dove for abs near Ft Bragg. We went in the water while a huge shark was feeding on a harbor seal a couple of hundred yards out. We reasoned, "Oh he'll never come way in here. Besides he's busy." We went in happily to get limits.
    We were FREAKING IDIOTS!
Then I kneeboarded 8-10 ft Pismo Pier under dim pier lighting at night, alone, twice.
In 1975 Jaws came out. Now a piece of eel grass touches me in the surf and I shudder.
Kudos to all the watermen and women who do it. My condolences to those who suffer mishaps.

If my memory serves me well, 13 divers lost their lives during 2008 in California, the last year I dove for Abalone.

Only one of them was due to a shark attack.

Most of them perished to entanglements, or exhaustion, but GW's are always there, even if you never see them.

We used to dive Abs near sea ranch and also get towed around tomales bay with a rope attached to an aluminum boat spearfishing for halibut,Ignorance was bliss!
I would not be doing those things nowadays even though i dont think there was any less risk then. The internet just lets you hear about these horrors so much easier nowadays.

We used to fish the kelp beds in float tubes a lot, we even had tournaments. Having a game bag clipped on the side with a bunch of bleeding struggling fish fish in it. What could possibly go wrong? Never heard anyone having a problem with a shark but don’t remember seeing very many like now. Couple kayakers have been hit, that’s got to suck

Stay “outta the sharks house”. RIP to the diver. Every time I dive, I cross my fingers. But the underwater world is so amazing. It’s worth the risk.

If I were to be attacked, I would prefer the shark decapitation. Quick and no suffering.

Had a 16' GW almost get me at Church Rock while spearfishing. A kelp bed saved my bacon. I call that my ultimate religious experience!
If that shark wanted you there wouldn't be anything you could have done to not be killed. Great Whites can and will kill sea lions and seals (Yay) kelp or no kelp. Randy Fry was in and around kelp beds when he got decapitated in Northern California.

...Non-divers are always the first to make unsupported statements on what a shark is going to do and how diver response is useless....Several divers have put shafts into large great whites and survived. A South African diver shot a 10' attacking gw in the head and killed it...A few weeks ago, a gw bit a Hawaiian diver across the torso. He repeatedly stabbed the fish with his knife, driving it away. Despite a serious injury, he survived. and..., thick kelp can be your best friend!...
... I speared a 9' Blue at point blank range that attacked me off Santa Cruz island and eventually won the battle. The spearshaft didn't even clear the gun; it was so close...My point: Be prepared to fight and you can survive. I carry a large gun and 2 knives: one on each side. If I am hit, I may be able to reach one or the other...
...Sadly, the Mexican diver above was one of 3 killed in that bay over the past 3 years.

It's the ones that you don't see that are the ones to worry about as with most predators attacking from your blind side. Take a lethal bite then back off to protects it's eyes while its prey bleeds out and weakens. Can't tell you how many times I dove in the middle of the night, by myself, near Seal Rock below the San Clemente pier...a known hangout for GW's. Or diving the Cortes bank. All for friggin' lobsters that I would just buy today as opposed to taking offshore risks at night. The amount of large GW's I have seen just at Catalina alone was enough to make me hang up my gear. Too old and too smart to take those risks now, especially for a lobster.

Took this pic below at Guadalupe Island...some serious dentures on those things. If it wanted you and you were in it's world you would not stand a chance...

Typical attack...inflict a lethal injury and back off and circle while it slowly dies...then feed.

...Well, at age 76, I still go spearfishing for white sea bass. Am a little more selective where I free dive these days, as there are definitely more great whites than in years past. I did quit nite diving and went to hooping with an electric winch.
...But, I am too young to take up bowling or go off to chase little white balls across the grass...

...the article states the shark "impressively" ripped off the head of the diver...
I came across this in La Jolla, thought it was a trash bag or somethin, but when I got to it , it wasnt. And by the look of the bite radius,.. it was a huge white
