I haven't fished the Lupe in a long time. I think the last time was 1989 or 1990. This trip was sold out for some time. I was lucky to book this trip today...someone could not go.... I will have to refresh my thoughts on this one. Chime in if you can point out what I might be forgetting. 30-100 in line.....I know you don't fish 30 at the Lupe but maybe if we stop for the bluefin that won't bite 40 I will have 30.... hooks 2/0-40 circle? fill me in guys and gals..
Thanks Soda Pop

Remeber....the world record YT was caught at Lupe. Though that was on the surface, theres other huge ones there. Make sure to bring 100 lb rig with some 16oz weights. Also a 50 or 60lb yoyo rig with several salas 6xjr. Any color works so long as its scrambled egg or zucchini.

Also some sabikis. And sunscreen and Gatorade. And Aleeve.

Good luck David. I've fished a lot of 30lb at Guadalupe. Works just fine for that 35 to 50lb grade. Don't tell anyone, but one year I fished straight 25lb. Very sporting on the same size fish.

My trip October 31st, will be my 4th since Guadalupe has been open. I would hesitate using 40#. My trip in November of last year, average fish was about 120# . Little interference from whitey, but from what I've heard lately, it's a lighter line fishery with some smaller grade fish, mixed in with fish up to 170. Unless one has a crystal ball, hard to predict what you will encounter. Seems the tuna get larger as the season progreses. My bottom line would be fishing a stealth presentation with a small diameter floro like Seaguar premier in 50#. That will put you in the game anyway. And from what I have experienced over the last few years, have a dedicated dropper loop rig, ready to spring into action at a moments notice. Last 2 years, big yellowtail moved in quickly during daylight hours, moved out just as quick. Those who were prepared, got a couple quality yellows. Good luck Soda pop, hope you have a great trip!!!

Stoked. Here is fish porn to get pumped. I think it was 72lb or heavier. He snuck the fish in off the bow. Great angler. All of a sudden the largest yt I have ever seen was on the boat. The fish looked spawned out and went 72lbs +

I was there last week and we actually used 30 most of the trip. They weren’t biting anything more then 40. The fish weren’t that big but there were a few standouts but 30 seemed to work the best with like a 2/0 or 3/0

Seems like it. Most wild animals don't die from old age but yah Lupe is a differant world with some aged mature species. That mossback probably weighed more at some point.

Multiple regions but Lupe and Alijos are home to world record yellows no doubt. Worth trying for and a fishing fantasy to fish. Good luck everyone

A captain once told me a story from chester rock. A pack of yellows followed the surface iron to the boat but just before the jig reached the boat they all scattered. The red carpet got layed out for a beast that took a look. No grind room remaining for a bite and the beast was never saw again

I'm down for a challenge. 30lb at Lupe with the average grade recently. Then the challenger bites :D all about good times

If it was just about catching 100# tuna on 30# , that would be one thing. But having to deal with the sharks in a prolonged fight on a 100# plus tuna, changes everything. 2 years ago I lost 8 in a row to whitey. I had the misfortune of being the only guy hooked up on those fish. Easier to squeeze some through the cracks with more fish hanging. Guadalupe is a hostile environment, I love fishing light line for big fish! But Guadalupe is a tough place to do that.

I’d take a spinner with a Calstar 800ml and load the reel with 20# test. Also, take your mask, snorkel and waterproof camera and send me some underwater photos.

And I thought you liked me Jon...LOL I don't go swimming with the sharks brother.

This is kinda what’s been keeping me up at night, how to gear up. Talking with Andy on June Heat, he mentioned Lupe as a possibility for the 6 day I’m fishing, August 5-11. The recent trip report, “Island in the Sun” has plenty of info, and one tidbit was the video with Jeff DeBuys talking tackle. Reference to 30 lb from “Outhouse” news. :) Jeff said 50 and 60 lb for the tuna, and if you like to throw a popper or the skip jig, they were hitting that, too.

Quite the departure from my last trip in early October when fishing 100 lb Premier or Sunline fluorocarbon was the norm. Times change. I think I know how I’m going to gear up. One outfit for heavy stuff, Mak 16SEa on the 76 Viper. Dropper loop or flyline if the bite goes stupid. Then...

BX2-600N, 50-60 lb Premier Seeker Black Steel 6465XH
FTH 40NLD2, lengthy 50 lb topshot of mono on CalStar 850 H
FTH 30LD2, 40-50 lb Premier, Seeker G6470H
Tyrnos 12II, 40 lb Premier, Seeker G6465H

Maybe add to that, still head scratching.

Traveling a bit light Steve. What works today, may not work tomorrow, as you know.
Here’s what I’m taking and it’s way too much.

One 30, maybe 2. Can use it for bait making.
Two 40
One 50
One 50/60
ATD 12 for 80/100
ATD 30 just in case
Trolling, dropper loop set up.

Now I just hope I get bit and land a few.

Someone got a cow there a few weeks back.

Well my 10 day leaves October 31st, most likely Guadalupe is our first destination. I'm relying on all you guys to get it all figured out by then, any and all information will be greatly appreciated!

Traveling light, that’s me. Might add another 50 lb reel, a Trinidad 40, long mono topshot of 50 lb, something for YoYo iron. Don’t think I’ll take any dedicated 30 lb outfit, can put a Sabiki on one of the 40 lb rigs. After listening to Jeff on the video, I dug out a couple of poppers.

looking forward to meeting you! Great trip, fantastic group of guys from the Ventura county sportfishing club. I'm very excited, I've been battling colon cancer for 2 years, last year i weighed 185 on that trip, im 6-4. Got my scans, and I'm clean, I weigh 250 today, bench pressing 270. I'm really blessed, and cant wait to see the guys on that trip! Life is good today, and I thank God for every moment. Im 61, and hope to be long range fishing for many more years!!!!

Personally I wouldn't drop in with less then 40lb at Lupe.

Have not fished it recently or this year and didn't want to go against what was being recommended by the boat. Which was my impression

Last trip was 50-110, nothing larger. 3 full days. Recommended line was 50-60lb. No sharks. Was the only person fishing 40lb seaguar. I didn't listen but highlined. 30lb is very differant then 40lb.

I know this is off topic but I was hoping to go on the June heat sometime soon. How does that trip usually do? And how did you do this year?

The 80.5 my wife caught there last year was skinny also. 18 year old fish from the NOAA biologist that took its head. I’ve read 5-6 years old is average life expectancy, and most sources have 12 listed as max
