Wanting to take advantage of the beautiful weather, my son Roy Jr, his buddy Greg, and myself decided to run down to San Quintin for a few days. Our plan was to make it a wintertime freezer filling run, targeting the usual reds and lings but were treated to some great deep water yellowtail fun. We fished the last 3 days in hot and glassy conditions with only a few hours of patchy fog on the first two days.

Day one, we punched up to the island to make bait and found blue 61 degree water and loaded up on big macks in no time. We ran out to the usual high spots and metered around slow-trolling baits hoping to run across some yellows. After only some big bonita, we soon turned to dropping deep for bottom fish. While metering over to a favorite rockpile we saw some nice marks and dropped jigs to be met by hungry yellowtail!

Day two, we fished the same reefs and found larger concentrations of Yellows willing to play. Unfortunately we were faced with more heartache this time as a couple of the brutes simply couldnt be stopped on 50lb and were lost to the rocks. All of the fish bit jigs, yo-yoed near the bottom in 200ft of water. It made for some exciting fishing!

We hadn't planned on fishing day three, but with the perfect weather and gamefish on the chew it was a no brainer! We picked up our friend Oscar from K&M Sportfishing and ran out, this time choosing not to waste time making bait as the fish were hitting irons and knife jigs just fine. Again we enjoyed great fishing with every drift producing some nice bottom fish and strong yellows in the mix.

Day four was spent sleeping in and smoking fish. We're gonna stick it out a couple more days and see if we can get back out there.

BTW, how was the detour on HWY 1 with your boat in tow?

Sorry we missed you Roy. We talked to Junior for a bit before we split that morning. See you found the same weather and great fishing we had also for the previous 4 days!! We will be back down around Feb 15 for a few days. Great job on the fish (especially the reds!)

Great pics and write up...X's 2 on the road conditions.. I'm not sure if your boat is down there or if you towed but any updates on the tecate route would be appreciated..

We leave the boat at my house in San Quintin so didn't have to deal with towing it down. We took the toll road down on Hwy 1 and took the detour from La Selena and came out at the San Miguel toll booth. Took about 30 min. If you bring the boat down that route, its doable, two lane highway that winds through the mountains. It's pretty slow going. The thing that will slow you down the most is the road construction that is still going on south of Santo Thomas.

Beer Goggles, we're still down here in SQ but are headed back up tomorrow. When I get back across the border, I will let you know of the road conditions through the Tecate route.

X-lent job Guys, looks like the freezer will be full. Kelly and i will be going down on the 17th, hope to see you there. That kind of weather makes it hard to do anything but fish, hope it holds for a couple of weeks. The pictures are awsome.

Hey Rick,

I'm working on it, pretty good chance I will see you down there MLK Weekend.
