Left san pedro at 3am picked up a buddy in laguna and launched at mission bay around 530am. Was 4th in line for bait and picked up some decent med/ large deans. Was greeted by some short interval stuff that wasnt the greatest in my 1801 and figured it was going to be a wet day. Splashed over to the north 9 to find some very boat shy fish puddling with alot of bait and no paddies. Headed toward the 302 saw some birds and dragged some lures had a nice 200+ lb mako come check us out when we were reeling in the trollers.
Finally found a small piece of kelp near the kidney bank and saw some jumping doritos.
Soon had doubles one yellow and one dodo. After that we had a nice pick on solid 15-18lb yellows and 10-12lb mahi. Filled up the kill bag and never even had to break out the spearguns.
We decided to start heading in to look for tuna.
Near the south nine we started seeing multiple spots of crashing tuna. Shutdown in front of big foamer and threw a in a popper and it was on.
I didnt think he was very big since i was fishing a lexa 400 and 9ft+ mh rod and got him near the boat in 5 minutes but then he woke up and took half my spool and had a good 20 min fight.
We had a long drive so we headed in and luckily the ride back was a bit smoother.
All in all great day and took out a friend for his first time offshore and probably spoiled him for life.

Mad skills on the Lexa 400!

My popper go to is a Tranx 400 long as the BF look under 60 +/-. Seems to cast the furthest of the trusted reels that I possess. Hope I can put the hurt to them as you did.

I can really launch a popper with that lexa but its made me nervous a few times when big tuna get toward the bottom of that spool. 😅 i fish 50lb fluoro on 40lb braid with the drag cranked down.
Thats my lucky orca topwater bait it has 4 bluefin a dozen yellowfin a few mahi and i actually caught a nice 20lb yellow this trip on it.
