I took my 20-something nephew out for an afternoon of bass fishing. He's an avid freshwater bass fisherman but has never fished for ocean bass. We left Angel's Gate around noon and fished around lobster buoys in the close-in water for 3 hours. Our first stop at a group of buoys was amazing. Both of our first casts were calicos and it was wide open for an hour. We then jumped around and caught more bass, a 50-50 mix of calicos and sandies. At least 30 for the 3 hours, the largest were around 3 lbs. All caught on kman plastics except for a few on Roddy's big orange twist tail. Water was about 60 degrees, and the downhill current was strong. Wind was moderate, maybe W 12 kts at 3pm. We saw two tourist boats chasing a small pod of whales near the last green buoy. And there was a tight group of a dozen boats (sporties and private) about a mile south of Pt. Fermin. Maybe the yellowtail that have been reported yesterday? We're going around Catalina tomorrow if the calm weather pans out. I'm familiar with the front side but have never fished the back side except on a sport boat . A favor - can someone PM me with a few bass fishing fishing spots to check out on the back side?
