Just wanted to let you guys know about a must have app for the iPhone.

I was talking to Ken (BucketMan) the other day and he told me about a chartplotter app for the iPhone that was good and covered Hawaii. It is from Navionics (the company that specializes in charts).

I ended up buying it since it was so cheap and nice to know you have a "backup" plotter just in case something goes wrong on the boat. After playing with it, I can say it works great and provides as much detail as the big ones and even does satellite imagery overlaying.

Here's some screen shots. Just do a search for "Navionics" in the app store. For Hawaii, you want the "Marine: US West" version.

I believe they have an Android phone version also.

    Thanks Ken!

Does it still work if you are out of range or no service?

Believe the iPhone 4 also has a standalone GPS chip......

    And, yes, this app rocks!

    Wow!
Maybe time to ditch my Blackberry... Looks nice! Just gotta find a phone that types as well as a Blackberry Curve.

I wish I could load this onto my Garmin Nuvi. Can it be done?

Gary, it does work when you are out of range. The charts are loaded onto your phone and the Iphone and droid have standalone GPS systems.

I had it running the whole time on the three day I was on early in the season.

This truly is like having a back up chartplotter on your boat.

It worked for me when I took NoZilla to SCI.

I got out there and tried it just to see if it would be a reliable back up, and it worked.

    Marcus.,

I have an I Phone 3s and I understand that they get their gps positions through the cell sites... I could be wrong.

If your Right and I am wrong ( I hope I am wrong ) then I jump on the band wagon and get the app. Like I said just one big mac......

I had the Iphone 3G and it had true GPS, I currently have the Iphone 4. It takes longer to get that signal but it does have true GPS. The Iphone has A-GPS. It has a standalone GPS but also has the option to use cell service triangulation when it has a poor GPS signal. When there is no cell service triangulation the GPS runs standalone.

I was able to run this app when we were well outside cell coverage and have up to date lat and long as well as MOB functionality and track. I was able to download it when I got home also.

Trust me on this when I say it's the best $10 you will ever spend on your phone.

BTW, when I used it earlier this year we were on the Intrepid, 250 miles down and it was as accurate as the boats chartplotter, I checked.
