Different people read my title and some expect limits and a few folks did limit. I did not, but that was my choice not poor fishing. I judge a trip by many factors including how many fish were caught. The group of 15 anglers were fun every day. Generosity was the common theme. There were a variety of folks from “this is my last trip” to those interested in getting the most fish on every stop. Captain Mike Lackey was nothing short of amazing. He was VERY generous with his time spending many meals with us. You are VERY WELCOME in his wheelhouse. While on deck, he got a number of us bit taking our rod, hooking a bait and handing you the screaming setup after getting bit. Mine was a wahoo on fluoro (no wire) which was hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth. I got the fish. His advice on fishing wahoo was the best I’ve received and it was evident on deck. Most people were able to calmly wind in their wahoo without drama and get that wahoo. We managed a great catch of those speedsters. There was a big bait making evening followed by some excellent big yellowtail fishing on the dropper with heavy string at night. If you used 60 or less you got tooled. Another bite was during the day with automatic hookups on sardines when your bait reached the bottom. I fished 80# on a Fathom 40 on a 700XH and was happy with that combo. The tails were 20-35 and everyone got enough. The treat was a bite of large pargo mixed with the tails. We caught enough to make a dinner and ceviche. After a move to the ridge we hooked up with a biting school of yellowfin. Every bait was either picked or you were on with a fish easily big enough to keep. Every cast was successful - long or short. The deck was crazy, bloody, but with cooperating anglers. Deckhands were highly skilled at avoiding issues or getting us out of trouble. A couple of people drew the coveted big models, one to the most skilled and one to an angler with considerably less skill - go figure. Several times during the trip we were attacked by voracious schools of dorado. We released many and moved on. On the way up we stopped for calicos. The predawn bite was EPIC. Every fish was big. How big? - I fished with jigs with 50 and 40 and both sticks were bent considerably. I saw 4-9 pounders everywhere. They felt more like yellowtail.

The crew was excellent, helpful and fun. If I walked up to the bait tank it was filled instantly with great sardines. If you needed help, needed rigging or advice they came through every time. The galley was manned by Abe and Dillon who managed to add five pounds to my girth. The food was excellent especially the freshly caught wahoo.

The charter master, Dwayne Patenaude and his wife Debbie made every effort to keep us happy. Debbie takes pictures, prints them and gives them to you the next day!

    So great in many ways…

Vagabond is my favorite boat! Have been fishing the Vagabond with Mike for over 30 years! Mike is awesome and always has a great crew! Doesn't matter if you are a veteran or a first timer Mike will always be helpful. He looks out for his customers, always treating them with respect. Looking forward to the 3 day my son Matthew and I are on leaving on the 16th!

Sounds like one for the ages Mark. Glad you were able to get out and have fun. My views on a successful trip run on the same wave length as yours.

Now hopefully the wahoo will be as cooperative on my trip after Thanksgiving and we get into some of those Pargo

Thanks for the great report Mark!!! Mike did spend a lot of time with us at meal time (he likes to talk largemouth fishing and baseball and we are hugely into that stuff) and even the galley crew remarked they had never seen a skipper spend so much time with the passengers. He is an incredible wealth of knowledge in ALL aspect of fishing.

All of our charters with Mike seem to be blessed. It is amazing how well he does for us especially with the wahoo. He made it sound like we would be happy with one a piece if we were lucky and he again hunted them up and we ended with almost a 3 fish per person average! Fishing the porpoise school for the YFT on the way home was pretty outstanding that afternoon, a complete bonus, and the huge calicos is always my favorite part of the ride home every year! Everyday was incredible fishing and we can not wait until next year!!!!

What was Mike's advice for fishing wahoo?
    In a nutshell

When hooked up slow down. Yes, wind but smoothly and perhaps more slowly. Tension at all times but no jerky movements or crazy winding. I used 30# stick with 27# wire and the wahoo were the bigger ones. He encouraged me to use my rod belt and put a bend in the rod because I was on a bait setup. In the past I aimed my rod at the wahoo and just kept winding with no bend in the rod. I’ve caught hoo using both techniques, but liked the rod butt in my belt. I’m 71 so it works for me. With trolled fish on heavy gear I aimed the rod at the fish, followed it to stay straight and eventually used low gear. Yes, it is a no no, but trolled fish need to be pulled into the boat, gaffed and out of the numerous bomb and bait folks. The fish were big and did not like the boat. It worked and I was out quickly. No losses to me as I went four for four, beating the average.

Mike talked for about an hour so certainly there was more. Perhaps others will chime in with the nuggets they took from his well educated seminar.

In short, relax and slow down. I saw it on deck with only one of 41 ripping up the side and around the boat.

I've heard the same from Mike. Last year, on the Ridge with the nicer YF in the 25-40lb range biting, I hooked up on bait and straight 30lb mono. Immediately figured it was one of the better tuna, one solid run, then a little back and forth off the stern. Just took it easy and lay the rod on the rail when it was about up and down. As it got close, Fluffy said, "Hey, it's a wahoo." So I just kept winding steady and in it came. So I kinda got an "unintentional" first-hand experience at what Mike was talking about with the wahoo! And it was 50lbs.

    Mark,

Fantastic report! Cannot say enough about Captain Mike, the crew, and the Vagabond!! Mike goes out of his way on every trip to make it enjoyable. It's not always the quantity or the variety. It's everything else - camaraderie with fellow anglers and crew, fishing experience, excellent food, and time on the water.

Well done Captain Mike, crew, and the Vagabond experience!

What was Mike's advice for fishing wahoo?
from my notes for hoo fishing - Mike's galley talk

    WAHOO FISHING
    Danger - pay attention always

    Troll lures
Want swivel under water. Not at surface = buble trail
    See me for rigging Nomads

    BOMBS
Dwayne bomb has treble hook st end

Fathom 25 star w/ handle in long position=GOOD reel
150 floro at 2 foot length floro
    Straight spectra
    7.5 foot rod

    Wire
If use egg sinker, 20 inch wire length
    18 inch is normal
Mike says he will go as short as 10 inches

    Live bait
3/0 hook min size. Not smaller
    Lighter drags
    22% drag strength of line
If pull drag, lighten drag or put in freespool( if hoo goes on blistering run)

50 to 150 feet mono topshot, 2 feet floro on 7.5 ft rod
