I moved to Bahia Asuncion almost 5 years ago now and one of the boxes I wanted to check was 50 pound yellowtail. After just 23 days of living here I hooked and landed a 48 pounder on my kayak and thought "well this is going to be easy". Unfortunately I haven't been able to put another one of that size or bigger on the deck until today. In about 125 ft of water I drifted across a big ball of bait at mid column with a couple of big arches on top of it. Dropped a jig and hooked up at 30 ft and then watched 60 or 70 yards of braid melt off my reel in a real hurry. Long fight but I was able to get a gaff into him. Taped out at 52 pounds on the boat. Pegged my 50 lb spring scale and registered 50.9 on the digital.

Congrats on checking off that box, not many people do. That’s an awesome fish!!

What formula did you use to tape it out. It seems very accurate and usually when I use the GxGxL/800 for yellowtail it isn’t.

That's the one I use. I find it accurate within 5% if the measurements are accurate. Length on a yt should be made with mouth closed to the fork in the tail, not the total length. The girth measurement I use on a YT does not include the bottom fins, so in actuality it is not the spot with the biggest girth.
