Chartered the Fortune back in Jan and didn't have clue we would be hunting 100lb+ BFT. This is a family and friends charter with 14 of us and Tish who runs the schedule for the Fortune called me as I left the house and said" Bring the big gear", turned around and grabbed my light big tuna setup (Talica 20 and 50lb rated super seeker) and my 2X4 with a Talica 25. Boy am i glad i did that!

As we boarded we were treated with seeing a big boy come of the boat from the day trip before approx 189 lbs. Juices are flowing and we are excited. Bait was mackerel sardine mix and we had plenty. Good weather and some snacks and away we go. Start fishing pre grey for nada on the pick. After grey some big BFT blow ups around us and things get interesting. We had what I would call a slow long range style plunker bite. Every 30 to 45 min we had a hookup, on sardines or mackerel. We had some casualties on some great gear up to 80lb, pulled hooks and a few chaffed line break offs. My brother landed a miracle 145lb BFT on a 9ft rod, 40lb mono, 65lb braid with an under-wrap on a Newell! We had a flash of some yellows and the BFT rolled through with them. I hooked my fish on a mackerel, 4/0 circle, 60lb flouro wind-on on the talica 20. Battled this fish which stayed on the surface up and away from the boat surfing most of the battle. So unlike most of the big YFT tuna I have fought who are more up and down. Skipper and crew were on it and boom! Fish of a lifetime.

My 18 year old daughter fishes well and hooks up on 50lb and 2 speed accurate that Bruce and the boat provided. She battled this fish like a pro, knelt down leveraging the rail and conserved energy for when she needed it. There was an excellent deckhand nicknamed cowboy on the left in this picture that never left her side, let her use his shoulder as a brace when the fish was up and out and hovered over her and the fish the entire time. Leah is going of to college this summer and to share this experience with her was beyond words. I am so appreciative and humbled by what we got to experience and see and catch.

Fortune is a fishy boat with a great crew and skipper, david in the galley took pride in his meals and we all were so happy. Good Fortune!

"Fortune favors the BOLD..." Especially on that big BFT nailed with what I normally use as an iron tossing stick. Ballzers!...Always knew it can be done. Light line inspiration for my 2 upcoming trips. I'm gonna get some...:jig:
