Its a little late but better than never. The Unc and I decide to take the girlfriend out shark fishing for the first time on saturday and it was a success. Hit the water about 0600-0630 and were fishing off la jolla about 0730. Found a nice conditions: temp break that held around 68, color change and some activity in the water.

    Summary:
    7 Makos seen
4 Hooked (One being my girls first :urno1:)
    3 Released
    1 To the freezer
***1 Absolutely Beautiful half eaten Fur Bag

As we headed out we noticed something only fisherman and sharks would find beautiful!

Mr. Dead Seal ... And here is his close up

For the Chosen Mako it was about a 90lb deep hooked Male
    IMG_1437.jpg

His eyes bulging out cuz he met the wrath of a 12 ga slug :Death_To_Above:
    IMG_1442.jpg

At the end of the day caught some sharks, made a mess, dressed him and threw him on ice! Back on the trailer by 1230-1300.

Maybe it's the angle, but it sorta looks like a female to me ....... in any case, good going on getting your girl her first ( a first is always cool!), and solid job on the releases!

Looks like it's got pre-cut arm holes for Bear Grylls:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Love that the large sharks apparently kill for fun. More reason to leave them out there.

Questions about the shotgun, have you ever been searched and harassed about carrying?

I know its legal, but curious to know if anyone has had an experiences on the water, or even at the ramp? When you get boarded to you disclose if not asked?

It is illegal to shoot them in the water since they have not been landed yet. I guess they want us to shoot them while resting in the bottom of the boat.

Always let the boarding party know that you have a gun on board.

    Thanks All!!!

Yeah it does look a little questionable from the angle but we made sure he had claspers although be them small they were there and under the fins.

As for us and our experience, we have been stopped by multiple agents at many different points e.g. dock, on trailer about to leave, on the water, etc. and haven't had a problem. All encounters have been professional and without hiccups. 90% of the time the boarding agent always asked if we had firearms or anything like that. As for if they don't ask its up to you to disclose, granted cooperation is probable the best bet for a smooth encounter. If i were you id access the demeanor of the officer and then inform them the location and state of the firearm. I work at a GUN SHOP so i am pretty knowledgeable in this area! It's important to note that as of Jan. 1st, 2013 you can no longer open carry long guns so that simply mean that it has to stay in a case during travel until the use of firearm.

Hope this helps and you have the same luck we have had with this issue.

    Cole

I always carry my off duty weapon on the boat and always disclose its location if not visible,it keeps the badge from thinking your hiding something and no badge likes to be surprised by a hidden firearm.

There was a large Great White sighted in La Jolla today. Maybe the seal was his work. Or if we are really lucky it wasn't and we have multiple large white sharks hunting the kelp beds.

I'll bet ya dollars it was another Basking shark. Nearly every year at about this time, the basking sharks show along the coast and people easily & commonly mistake them for a white.

Did you catch that above reply (#14) Owen. ;)

You can see them just barely in the pic. Might as well have kept him, he wasnt going to get many girls with those little things.
