Got the invite to join Roy and Frank on Frank's 21' skiff. Our main goal was to fish Catalina and try out these new 170 size Hydro Minnow hardbaits made by Yo-Zuri. Nice weather going across and pretty much all day with not much wind. We exclusively threw the hardbaits most of the day to test them out.

Our first few areas consisted of poor conditions, slack current. We kept moving and looking until we found a small area that looked ideal in 20-30' of water. Then it was game on!

Wolf packs of big aggressive bass would follow the hooked one. It became a ripper bite for a while then tapered off to one here and there.

Beautiful bronze on bronze. Check out that fin coloration.

    Doubles are always fun!

All lit up hitting the dark bait.

These fish were not hesitant to absolutely destroy these baits.

We looked around just a little bit more before calling it a day. The ride back was just as pleasant as the ride over.

In conclusion, we met our goal and found how the bass best reacted to what kind of retrieve on these baits. The 170 are larger and a bit heavier so it was quite easy to cast long distances with heavier tackle fishing around structure and kelp, which I really like. They also have a slow horizontal rise so they stay in the zone longer if you pause.

With lots of bait fish around, good signs surface action is really starting to perk up. Go out there and get some!

Frank + Roy + Sherm on the same rig... Tossing hard baits. Poor checkers never had a chance. Nice

Nice! I gotta try that. Drowning swimbaits is fun and all, but I need to broaden my horizons. Anyone accomplished with throwing hard baits at Cat want to join me on my sled?

Great Report, I fished Catalina Wednesday and Crystal Cove on Thursday but never threw the hard baits. I did well with the hard baits last year. I expanded my collection at The Fred Hall show, so I'm excited to try my new SP Canibal Calico.
