Penn Torque 25n Star Drag... Best/most versatile reel for west coast fishing... Can throw chovies with 15-20lb leader, can fish 40lb iron, both equally as well... Amazing freespool, strong oversize gearing, built to last a long long time....

Put it on a Calstar 850m and your golden.

Take a 15lb stick just in case. The bait and bite is varying.

I use a Calstar 700ml with a Daiwa slx 30 for 25lb. I back it with braid also. Caught lots of yellows and the 3 B's on it

Seriously? The answers are endless. You can have the best rod and reel in the world and that fails to help many. I've seen guys with killer matching gear suck like no other at fishing. On the other hand, I've seen guys with old Newells and an old rod to match, killin it. It's not your toys gentlemen....it's how you use it.

You guys are crazy!!! The absolute best rig for yellows is a 8' shikari medium action blank custom wrapped with Fuji Hardloy guides. I would match it with an Avet MX 5.8. Here's the tricky part....you have to make sure your reel color matches the thread on your custom wrapped rod. If you have fail to do this, you will never land a yellow...trust me on this!!! Now for your line....I would start off with Power Pro Super Slick 60lb braid, with a 150 yd topshot of 25lb Berkley Big Game Clear.

Look if you guys want to ever catch a yellow on a regular basis, you have to follow my above example to the T! I have the exact same set up and I hook a yellow with every cast....without this particular gear you will struggle to catch that yellow of your dreams. If you have questions, please by all means let me know.

Ive been mostly using a #20 outfit. Live Bait. I get less bit on 30. Some say 25 is pretty good.

3 yards of 20lbs Fluoro leader.
300yards of Braid. (never been close to being spooled with even 30lbs yellowtail)
    Drag set to 5-7lbs.

    Fish on!!!.

I use Terez 8ft Medium Light. with Trinidad 14a. I like it. I get the "Bass Rod" comment a lot. But its really a #20 outfit.

You should tailor the outfit/setup to you. <---------------------------------- (the length, strength of rod and strength and size of reel).

Im 5'10" and I use 8ft rod so i can walk around the Bow of the boat without having to lean forward over the rail and strain my back. And I dont have big hands so i like to use as small of a reel as possible. I would definitely like to use 6-7ft rods because its easier to pitch bait for me... seems like the live bait hitting the water is softer when you pitch the bait vs casting over head.

Not sure if Braid is your thing but it becomes more versatile. If this is your first setup, and decide to use braid, you can tie 20,30, and 40 lbs leaders to someting like

terez medium, trinidad 16. 300 yards of 65 braid.

or west coast teramar inshore medium heavy and torium 16

I'm old school and it's taken me a while to finally get some new shit. I use a Calstar 700m? (20-40) with a gunmetal Avet MX 5.8 spooled with 65 green PP and a 100' 30 lb topshot of quality mono. The YT love it so much that I have to hide it in the rod holders at the side of the boat so they can't see it - that way, the other anglers fishing with me get a chance of getting one on their gear...oh, and after a couple 25 lb fish this old guy is needs a break!

25# yellows? The answer is obvious, and beyond reproach: Fathom 25n on a UC US90 Monster...

Fishing bait just ain't the same...
