Been on 100's of charters and open party trips. If I ever win jackpot I'll let you know.

I usually fish on my sled solo, so far I always win and give the JP to the crew.

Pinheads are kids. Which is why seeker had a little boy on their pinhead series rods
Yep, pinhead referring to youngster goes back decades to the days when we had anchovies in the bait tanks, not sardines. Pinheads were the very thin, small 'chovies that were the size of your little finger but skinnier. What we now encounter offshore and call "microbait." Fish still love to munch them, but they are almost impossible to use as bait.

Last time i won the jackpot on a open party my intent was to give it to the crew after my tab was covered, i had to ask for it they were just going to assume they could have it i guess. I asked for a sweater and tab then they could have the rest, dude looked at me like i was taking money that was theres already!! It was a overnighter jackpot was like 240, so they still got a 50 percent tip from me!

I always try to tip well but its according to service.

That kinda attitude is BS . I ran into that situation once years ago.. Crew that day was fair/good and would have gotten a good tip until they started with the attitude. They earned what they got - 0.

I cover my tab and the rest goes to the crew
I used to go on a long charter trip every year. $100 to enter the JP. There’s was one notorious skinflint who went every year and the crew knew they wouldn’t get a sniff of that fat JP. Needless to say The crew wasn’t super excited to help him, they would but not with equal enthusiasm. Was fun to watch. He won it one year with a 297lb yft. We figured it was a little bit of karma that it was a couple pounds shy of a super

I don’t think anyone is entering the jackpot to actually make money.

“Tradition” is to usually buy a round for the crew and tip well off of it but I don’t think the whole thing. Usually after paying your own tab and buying a round there isn’t much if any left anyways.
If a kid wins it let him take it all. He’s too young to buy beer anyways.

I went out today on a boat a little larger than my inflatable. My dad won the jackpot. We got a couple shirts, had a small tab, tipped and came out of pocket for fish cleaning.
To me it offsets the days expense and is fun to be apart of no matter if the fishing is tough or wide open and everyone is eager to weigh theirs at the end. I’ve never been in a jackpot that was too expensive to enter and never won or lost one that bothered me so much I’d never enter one again

I wish I had a dollar for every time this subject came up here on BD, then I’d book a trip.
Me too, an 18 day on the RP

No interest in doing jackpots anymore, unless it’s amongst a group of friends. Way too many shenanigans, and it detracts from the experience. Some boats, it’s like a 3 card Monty game with a New York street hustler.

There is a difference between deadheads and dickheads and sometimes those two are confused here. As someone that occasionally gets invited to ride off the manifest I do not join jackpots just to avoid being confused for the latter. I only do jackpots on charters and if I win I'll take out my initial investment and let the rest cover my expenses.

A lot of people say, pay the galley and fish cleaning with the jackpot, That might be ok for 1/2 day and overnight trips, But L.R trips that doesn't apply your food is already covered and theres no fish cleaning on L.R trips, J.P should go to crew for all the work they put in 24/7 to make your trip like a vacation in addition to your normal tip.

Once upon a time a jackpot on a local half day or full day trip could cover cost of trip, galley tab and fish cleaning with money left. I always paid my galley and balance to the crew. Never became a deadhead as out fishing them was half the fun and had times when a crew tries cheating to change outcomes. I won a lot of jackpots almost every trip some seasons. Long range trips 100% to crew no question
