Settle a bet for me… The way I came up tipping crew is a must and if you win jackpot then cover your galley and rest goes to crew. In the past it wasn’t uncommon for a few boarding passes to miraculously appear in your pocket as a result as if my magic since the crew wants you back out because they know you’re going to take good care of them. I’ll be sticking to my roots and doing right by them no matter what but is this something you guys still see happening? My buddy says no but I’ve never had that fail to happen.

If I gamble my money by entering a jackpot and win then I think the pot belongs to me and there is no requirement for me to share/give it to the crew. However, I do tip 20% of the trip cost if service is good and it is always good on long rang trips. This is my 2 cents.

like hismosa said, deadheads are an issue so i prefer boats that don't do jackpot at all.

but the way i used to think about it.... jackpot is essentially tip collection in advance for the crew. let's say it was $20 to buy in. if you win, you're simply giving the crew your $20 as part of your tip, and all the other $20's you collected from everyone else, too.

I almost never enter jackpots anymore because I slowly began to realize that it was distracting me from really enjoying the day. I was paying too much attention to what was happening for the other anglers and feeling self-imposed pressure if someone was getting a bigger fish gaffed than I had taken.

But I won a lot of jackpots over the years and handled it just like Mako did, cover the galley and fillet cost and return the remainder to the crew. Often the captain would offer a pass, which usually ended up covering a pal who wanted to learn about ocean fishing.

I've always given my jackpot to the crew to cover my tab and usually get a free ticket. Some boats can't give out free passes due to their charter schedule, so on those boats, I tend to just ask for a sweater or a shirt and they usually throw one in.

I believe it all depends on your personal finances. I do not enter the jackpot on open party trips. I have already budgeted for the crew tip before I get on the boat. I fish mostly private charters each month and If I win the crew gets the tip. I noticed that the service I received after wards was noticeable. On the multi day trips the meals seem to be a little larger and the drinks stronger. What I do is simple if I win they get the entire jack pot. I usually get a sweatshirt or a couple of tee shirts for my kindness. Example my last 2.5 day on the Cortez I won the second day JP. It was 380 dollars. That equaled more than 50% of the entire trip. We had a 50 dollar fuel surcharge added to the galley tab. I just slid the JP back to the young lady that was in charge of the galley. Than I handed her the 50 dollar fuel cost as that was part of the original cost of the trip (750) When I left the boat She came to my truck with a new Cortez sweatshirt and tee shirt as a thank you. If you are wondering the first day jackpot winner gave the crew 100 dollars total including his galley tab and fish cleaning. Cheers

I like playing the jackpot just because it's a fun tradition. On the occasions when I win, give a good chunk to the crew but I keep a little for myself. I'm not a rich guy so it's nice to at least get something back for myself too

I always enter the jackpot with the intention of giving it back to the crew. All of the 1/2-full day boats I fish that still do a jackpot offer a trip pass and cover fish cleaning. Sometimes galley tab as well.

One reason the local boats stopped doing Jack pots in SD was the 200 identical fish being caught in open water.
What the hells the point of everyone trying to measure a fish an inch shorter or longer when some random bycatch always wins.

I do not participate, I would rather not pay attention to the process or results. In general, I'm pretty competitive and when I go fishing, I'm there to relax and enjoy.

However, if I was fishing with my daughter, I would put her in the jackpot, just like my dad did for me when I was a kid.

I give mine to the crew, never gotten anything back other than my own personal satisfaction to catching the biggest fish. I wouldn’t stand a chance without them to catching one, so I have no problem sharing the wealth.
