I would have reported the deckhand. That was completely uncalled for, and it sounds like we have a potential sadist amongst the ranks. I may have even intervened - can’t stand seeing animals being abused.

Back in the day I helped free one, since the deckhands were all busy unhooking fish, and while doing so I got beaked on the nose really good. It bled quite a bit for a while, and 30 years later I still have a very visible scar. Regardless, when the bird was free I gently tossed it in the air as the OP suggested - the bird was just scared and didn’t deserve to be hurt and I was mature enough to realize it.

I'm in agreement with releasing the bird unharmed. Pure ignorance and frustration on the part of the Deckie. That said, how many of you would gladly bust a cap in a seal (without legal ramifications of course) with your 25 pound Yellowtail and favorite surface iron in his mouth? As much as it sucks, we're in their world and this stuff happens. No need to be a DB and kill the bird IMO.

That’s messed up. Yes I kill fish but they end up on my dinner table. Killing for no reason other than you are having a bad day/your line got tangled is wrong.

In todays progressive world of things meaning whatever you want them to mean, it means whatever you want it to mean. :puff:

PS: the trick of bending the head forward to "subdue into submission" works on anything with a neck.

Next time report it to DFW and take pictures if possible. People who kill animals for no reason give us fisherman as a whole a bad name.

Actually you can't trust sea gulls, they do a lot of stupid shit. Pelicans you can trust. Still no reason to break their necks like that

Terns are your friends. Seagulls will bite you, steal from their friends and shit on everyone and yet I’ve always let them go as painlessly as possible. I had a hat trick one day and caught a seagull, pelican and tern. All were released without issue. I’d have serious issues with a deckhand trying to twist thei heads off.

I mean come on, there are a lot of factors in locating fish, There are other birds I’d look for depending on what we are targeting. Other birds I could certainly appreciate.
Given the creatures you encounter on and offshore, they got to rank pretty low in the hierarchy? Go to Kansas and any other state and see them all over the trash dumps. Not a fan.
All the attacking of the deck hand is a bit too much. Calling him names, sadist, etc. a bit over the top. The lynch party seems ready to assemble over what?
How many sea gulls come back after your bait after you have already released them - time to end that learned behavior for one wayward bird, wouldn’t make a dent to the sixth decimal point in the scheme of things.
