I own a Garmin 7600 XSV series that is touch.
While my part of me loves it how easy it is, the other part can’t stand it when my fingers are wet. It could suck. I wish they made it with both options like Lowrance. Or maybe they do and I am not aware of it.

The 1 inch screen is better but it has no touch.
You just need to weigh out what you prefer.

Are they the exact unit? And if so, kinda strange they made the smaller screen touch and the bigger one with a keypad

The new Garmin Plus units are hybrid/ touch but limited to inches. If you want a 10 or 12 inch touch screen with the addition of buttons you could always add the Garmin Grid remote mountable keypad.

No, the processor is slower as would be expected from a lower tier product.

A few things.
That's a 4 plus year old unit
The 1042xsv is it's replacement
"The factory outlet" isn't an authorized Garmin Dealer.

Friends don't let friends buy outdated gear! Would you buy a 4+ year old cell phone or computer? I don't think so...
But the newest, largest unit that fits your space and budget.
Just ask the guys who bought Simrad NSS Sport units after the NSS Evo2s were out, they cannot use the Halo radar that was introduced when the Evo2s were still current. Backwards forwards compatibility is a major consideration when buying new gear.

I just installed the 942xs, it's a great unit. The 3D imaging is great for seeing the high spots. I installed a B75M transducer, 20kts... no problem with picking up the bottom.

OK - the 1040xs is headed back and I've ordered this:

https://www.thegpsstore.com/Garmin-GPSMAP-742xs-GPSFishfinder-with-CHIRP-ClearVu-P5080.aspx

This is going to actually fit on my console.

This process was a lot more work than I anticipated. First purchase was a Lowrance HDS9 Gen 3 with a Totalscan transducer - I messed with this in the man cave for a bit and although it was nice I decided I really wanted a Garmin so I sold it to a friend for his bass boat - perhaps a little overkill in that application - we'll see at El Capitan reservoir this weekend.

Then I purchased a keypad GPSMAP 1040xs that was almost half as wide as my console...

It's over - no more changing my mind. Now I need to go fishing.

The Garmin GPSMAP 942XS is a 4 year old unit? Saw one today at a retail store and looks nice and has many features the higher priced units have. Also, the large screen is a plus, without much wasted space.

I used my 942XS for the first time this weekend and am very happy with it. The 742xs is just the smaller version. I have the GT-23TM transducer and the images were great off the standard auto gain and chirp. I’m sure when I learn to use it and manually tune it’ll be even better. Enjoy!
