From the stomach of a tuna…

We had slower than usual fishing for YFT on our recent 16 day trip on the XL, but I thought I’d share something that I found interesting.

I like to flush out fish after they’ve been landed/weighed to see what the fish have been eating. I thought that I’d seen just about everything come out of a tuna; seahorses, sausage patties, bones from spare ribs/chicken wings among other oddities.

I flushed out two different tuna and both contained juvenile Mola Mola (aka Ocean Sunfish). And judging by the condition, they hadn’t been in the tuna’s stomach for too long. One was so fresh that I put it back out under a bobber balloon, but unfortunately never got bit.

Another contained four prickly puffer fish. These are different than the smooth puffer fish that LR boats use for bait at places like HB.

Gilled and gutted tuna ready for the RSW, saw the guts from a previous one in the stomach contents. Grabbed a heart and pinned it on, fished it like a chunk. No biters, but...

I didn't know anything eats Sunfish, something that eats jellyfish can't be very good eating.

That would have been so cool to catch one on a recycled sunfish. Last year I cleaned a 15lb dodo with a 15” baby dodo in it’s belly. Guy I was fishing with said “they don’t get big by playing nice”
    Carnivores, ay?

I’d like to see the jumbo oversized Turkey baster for milking tuna. The fishing tackle shops in So Cal don’t have them in stock. LOL
