Buddy is in from Texas and wants to hit la Jolla... Didn't think there were fish like this left in La Jolla. Bit a dropper looped sardine... Twice! He fought it and lost it! One of those mystery fish you never get to see. Then it came back and bit again... This time it found the net!
Many, many years ago I lived in Lemon Grove and was beginning my California sportfishing career. I would fish with Fred Huber on the Daily Double, half day trips. During the 'off season' we would mostly bottom fish. The night before a voyage I would go down to the little creek at the entrance to the Spring Valley Swap Meet and collect crawdads. They were very, very effective bait for Sheephead, aka goats or as we called them, mother in law fish. ( just because they were so ugly ). Great eating and well worth the effort to gather tiny "langostas" ( lobsters ).
Crazy to think about it but this was around 35 years ago and I can only imagine how many beginning anglers Captain Fred Huber has turned on to ocean fishing. Great guy. Terrific ambassador to entry level fisherpersons in San Diego. No doubt Fred has hooked many an angler.
And sure thing , that goat is a beauty. Nice catch.
