My youngest son and I took a trip to Florida to visit relatives and Peacock bass has been on our bucket list for a long time. Liam caught a few nice bass in the everglades and they put up such a good fight! Here is a bunch of photos from our trip from Port Charlotte to Key West. We stopped at Robbies to hand feed the tarpon and it was really cool seeing those up close. The same lure that caught the peacock bass, also worked on snook and tarpon that we caught and released the next night under a bridge in Port Charlotte. We also bow fished for mullet with my cousin, we didn’t get any that day but he’s been pretty successful with the bow on his previous trips. Snook are so fun to catch! they are great fighters..you know when they are around and feeding, they make a strange suction noise, almost like a popping. Tarpon also make these noises and they are super fun to catch..once you hook them, hang on tight! The everglades canals hold tons of Gar and snakeheads and some of the biggest bluegill I have ever seen and if you're lucky like we were, there are some Peacock bass.

There were a few days that it was blown out when we planned on fishing down there, and when that happened, we would wait for the outgoing tide late night and go under the bridge, Snook, Ladyfish and Tarpon etc..in a feeding frenzy..that tide change gets them all riled up and ready to feed...this was my first time snook and tarpon fishing and they are so much fun to catch..they hit your lure with such violence!...those snook are pound for pound one the best fighting fish out there! I was fishing for snook when I hooked a tarpon..talk about a strong fish! eventually my 80lb FC leader couldn't hold up and I didn't have the right reel to handle it...it broke off but not before we all got to see it jumping multiple times. If you ever get a chance to fish for Peacock bass, they also hit the lures hard and fight all the way! We did go out fishing one day when it was really windy..we fished the back bay for mullet, sea trout and snapper..I saw the largest hammerhead shark you could imagine in front of the Punta Gorda state beach..massive beast...it was too windy in that area and we ended up moving back into the back bay with our flats boat..I asked my cousin what Mullet taste like and he said "heaven" so I'll definitely have to try it sometime.

Outstanding. It's a magical place down there. Everybody needs to take a trip to the keys at least once in a lifetime.

I have video of the peacock bass catches, but wish I had the tarpon video..was like a water rodeo for a while until I lost it on the pylon, that thing was ripping drag, there was no stopping it.

One of gator alley stops along the 41, Liam was trying for some gar when we spotted this rod n reel set up sitting about 20’ back in the mud, so I went through the webs and swamp grass and grabbed it.. pulled a few leaches off it and wiped off all the swamp slime, and pulled off some of the line and it cleaned up pretty good and still worked great.. our next stop there was a family/kids fishing along the canal and we gave it to them, the kids were so stoked :) you just never know what you're going to find on adventures.

We stopped by my dad’s old place on Grassy Key.. it was still there untouched by the big hurricane.. the new owner let us come in and look around (my youngest son never had a chance to visit him there before my dad passed away) we looked through some old photo albums at the clubhouse and there were plenty with my dad holding fish..(my dad in the middle) we fished the docks there and my son almost caught a big redfish but those fish are skiddish.. he settled for catching and releasing a bunch of cuda.... was good to see the old place still there and still fishy.

Great pic of your father and his compatriots.

I have not worn cut-oft Levi's in ages.

Debi, thank you for sharing.
