Excellent report & tremendous fish!! 🙌🏽

I had the exact same thing happen to me last week fishing on a private boat in the dark hours around Tanner.

Saw some nice meter marks down around 500’ deep, so I deployed my old school 280g Shimano Butterfly Flat Side jig in mackerel colors with upgraded stinger hooks.
On the fast retrieve it got totally WHOMPED. 💥
Sunk a couple gaffs into a nice 221# BFT an hour later.
Was surprised to see the jig totally bent from the immense strength/weight of the fish!

Figured - why change what is working?!
So I straightened the jig a bit and sent it back down…..ended up landing a 100# on that same jig shortly thereafter.

Great way to wrap up a season…..

Got one
I went 2-4 , both in the 150 class with a Penn 40NLD2.

Wow! Hell of a change going from 15 pounders to toads! Nice catching. Great post.

BTW, just curious what rod you paired your 40NLD reel with? And how did the rod work on the toads? Obviously well. I bought that same reel a couple of months ago and was waiting for the Carnage 3 that is supposed to come out in a few weeks. Thanks.

Nice fish!

What do you think would be the better reel on a school like this, an Avet EX30/2 with 80# braid to 130# leader, or an old Penn Int’l 50 that’s been converted to 2-speed and blueprinted, spooled with 100# hollow core served to 130# mono?

usually I consider my Avet as the cow reel but wonder if that 80# braid can cut it

Personally I would go heavier than 80 after what I witnessed. This quote is directly from Tribute facebook page, "They bit pretty darn good last night on the heavy jigs! We landed 13 after the sun went down, 11 of which were 130-150 ish and 2 over 200 with the bigger one going 220.
Unfortunately, the casualty rate was pretty high due to the lack of heavy tackle aboard our 1 1/2 Total Environmental Management annual charter. 30 bluefin total for our 21 Angler’s.
Bring your heavy gear! 80 pound isn’t considered heavy enough when they bite like that!"

What an amazing story Eye Probem!

I was out there on the new loan and saw you guys on the Tribute not far from us that night. We had the same thing happen but not until about 5:30am. I dropped my 400gram rip roller down, the guy next to me hooks up and we have a 4 way tangle immediately. Captain cuts my jig half way up the leader and hands me my jig. Shit no time to figure out a new leader for that jig. I had already rigged up an 80lb set up that I was going to use during the day to draw bite. I had 100lb braid to 80lb floro leader crimped straight to a 250gram sk jig. Dropped down about 300' and im on. Fish dumps about 3/4 of the spool then it's back and forth for probably about an hour until 4 gaffs sunk in it and it came through the side gate. I was using a penn 16visx with a 76 Centaur. I would of much rather had my mak 20 with my viper using 100lb to 200lb bite leader but these were the cards I was dealt and it couldn't have worked out any better. The jig ended up getting swallowed by the fish and believe it or not the leader was hardly chaffed and it shook it's head like all hell.

The fish ended up being 232lbs. What an amazing experience! I'll carry the memories of that day forever as im sure you'll do the same. Congrats!!

KOS, glad you guys got some, I saw your boat sliding in after the eye of the storm. Looked like there was at least a couple that scored on that bite on our way out, congrats!!!
