Jackpots ~ What would you do if the deckhands were to beg you to donate your winnings to the boat for a ticket that is only 1/4 of pot?

More and more I see the deckhands on some of our SoCal Boats begging to donate the funds. I myself usually tip 25-30% of my total cost of the trip depending on crew. But to have a deckhand begging for a jackpot, doesnt seem to wanna keep me fishing on those boats. I would like to know what you would do, or your opinion.

Tip deckhands like you'd tip a waiter/waitress. Was the service awesome! Give them the JP. Were they fishing and not helping your kid with a tangle? Keep it.

Ask yourself this: If a waitress asked you to tip her well, would you? Probably not. You'd tell the restaurant manager about her shenanigans and most likely you would not visit that food joint again. Then you would tell all your buddies not to eat there either. Point is, you should tell the captain. He and the boat are losing business if his deckies are creeps.

Nothing for beggers. The whole JP for non-beggers.

I do not know what boats you ride, but I have never experienced a deck hand asking or begging for anything. When I have won the jackpot, (which is not that often) I chose to donate to the boat, but that is my own personal preference. Do what you want it is your money, just don't be a doche and not tip at all.

I was on a trip once where the Capt talked about tipping before and after the trip. My last trip on the SA90 there was no mention of tipping and they even waived the fish cleaning fee and served free breakfast on the way back because of the snotty weather conditions. Had I won the JP I would have gladly donated it to the crew as I've done in the past. Not because I feel obligated but because they deserved it.

I pay my galley/fish cleaning tab and give the balance back to the boat......

I'm not high maintenance for them and even try try to help with little stuff while they are working their asses off.

The way I see it I would only rethink handing off the JP if all of the crew and Capt were asshats........ One flakey methhead deckhand shouldnt cost all of them.....

    JMO

I am grateful that they are there so I'm happy to tip well..... times are really hard for these guys.... If we don't support them they will find another way to make a living.

I usually cover my tab and hand off the rest, maybe ask for a shirt.
but thats if the deckhands/captain dont ask or tell me to hook them up. Fuck that shit. If ive been on the boat before they are shure to get the pot if i win it. Ive handed off $375 on a 2.5 day. I kept a few bucks but what the hell it was mine. and i think it was a $500 pot and the meals were included in trip price .and I dont usually drink beer. so I felt that to be fair.

Agreed, asking for a tip is BS, regardless of how good a job you thought you did. I am a deckhand and I have NEVER discussed a tip with any client, much less begged  I do my job and do it well and 9.5 times out of 10 I am rewarded for my effort, despite shitty fishing.

IMO, this is the best of both worlds, the jackpot fisherman gets to enjoy some of his rewards and the crew gets a bonus. Happy Happy.

Nevertheless, to somewhat defend my deckhand brethren and just so ya'll know. Generally speaking, boat wages vs hours worked are typically less than minimum wage, we can only make a living with your generosity...btw, that's often true for the skipper too.

What kind of "tip" are you talking about? Saluki might get confused if you are talking about $$.

I have left plenty of jack pots with the crew. Normally I will take my galley tab and fish cleaning out and leave the rest. Those guys work so hard for so little dough. I have walked off with a couple after being brow beaten to do so. When I do tip it's always based on how hard they worked never based on the number of fish I caught.

I fished out of Avila Beach a few months ago and was so pissed off at the crew I didnt leave a tip at all. I think that was the first time I have ever done that.

First time on a boat just to try it out for a 2 1/2 day trip and won the jackpot. one of the deckhands was practically telling to give it all to them, first and last time I rode that boat.
