Was trying to jig up some bait to fish halibut this morning. Saw a bunch of bird working and headed that way, then saw 3 humpbacks totally blowing it up along with a big herd of dogs. So I get there and the meter is pretty loaded up. Looks like maybe Spanish Macs. But no, it was these things. Not a Mac. Not a smelt. Not a sewer trout. There were thousands of them and I've never seen one before - really want to believe it was a big school of juvenile WSB. Anybody know for sure?

I would agree with makairaa on that ID. We had a couple of years up here when they were thick as thieves.

Not sure if that was a joke. I know smelt is never the “target” baitfish ppl want but I’ve caught a lot of quality halis on them when they were the only bait I could find
If fishing a harbor where smelt is the natural food source I am not sure there is a better bait.
