Imagine if that hook had gone into his forehead—at the start of a charter, and then he kept fishing...
Shit....dude can take the pain well. Go to about 6:30 mark.
Man that guy is lucky that fish didn't go bezerk once he was hooked. He may not have stayed so chill had that happened.
And this is why I have a pair of bolt cutters on the skiff ,thankfully have never had to break them out .
Years ago a guy next to me was pulling a 45 that was caught on kelp.. as soon as i said don't pull it came out flying directly at my face....
I threw my hand up and the hook buried in the lower palm of my hand ...
Norm took me in the galley and said he was gonna try something he heard about by tying a line to the shaft at a certain angle and yanking it out..
I was mortified but had complete trust in him having been worked n and runnin boats for many years..
He said are you ready and counted back from 10... when he got to 3 I started to flinch and said go ahead and he said it's already out... apparently he pulled at 5 and I didn't even feel it come out...
That method has been used over and over since and if the hook is at the right angle it slides right out....
Then you make poor Stinger cut it out.
This is why on hooks with multiple trebles I fish barbless on the front or a single
been there, done that. 70 miles south of diego , club marlin tourney. hooked a small tuna , decked it, and it threw the jig at me. ended up catching a 9/0 forged mustad right in the left index finger tip. cut the hook, but it broke the bolt cutters, and the barb was still buried in my finger tip. couldn't pull the hook out. we fished all day , and I didn't make it to the hospital the following morning, sunday 4am.... went to Hogue , Newport beach. had to wait 3 hours in er, and when the dr finally showed up to take out the hook my wife and the nurse started laughing like crazy. I said wtf is so funny. they pointed to the dr's name tag.... dr. hook!
My friend says why do you have bolt cutters on the boat?...I say why do you have that hook in your leg. This happened to be the first day of a three day trip. He stayed away from the rapalas after this. The rapala ended up in his leg due to horsing in a yellow keeping it out of a seals mouth.
I have done this...ask the guys at Seaforth landing...worst part was fishing solo from the jetty into SD river and hooked a nice halibut on the lucky craft. Brought the Hali to shore, attempted lip hook with my platstic lip grabber thingy.... two seconds later have a Hali flopping attached to my forearm. Worst part was having to kill the fish before it did more damage with the trebles. Walked in there and asked can someone help me do what I need to do. Out with the heavy dykes, push the barb all the way through, cut and slide back.
I’ve now got 12 fingers and moss grows from my elbow
