Haven't posted on here in a while, I put most of my fishing pictures on Instagram @bigjsandyballs now, but I thought I'd share this one on here.

I have been on the hunt for a wahoo for the past 5 weeks. Fishing solo every weekend and trolling all day up and down the coast and islands. Been in the right place every time with people on the radio hooking up within sight and actually seeing one landed just a few hundred yards from my boat. Doing everything right yet no bite. I figured wahoo are just a dumb luck fish and that my time would come if I just kept at it. So, I was not discouraged by a skunk out day.

Finally my time came this past Saturday. I studied the temp charts the night before and decided to fish a band of warmer water off the 14. Launched out of Huntington Harbor and headed to the 14. I found an area of 70 degree water with several large kelps holding hundreds of small yellowtail and lots of terns eating micro bait. Tons of life and great looking water but it just didn't feel fishy.

After 4 hours of grinding up the area I started to hear lots of marlin chatter on the radio. Guys started hooking up left and right. I thought about the wahoo that was speared off the east end the day before and my suspicions were confirmed when one of the marlin guys said where he was getting bit.

I ran over to the island and stopped three miles off. I could see the big yachts to the south. I metered around and found the 100 fathom curve and pointed it up the island. Dropped back a wired up, mean joe green, Zuker and a dorado colored Yozuri Bonito. Throttled up to 10kts and within 2 minutes BAM!!! The Yozuri goes off. I did a slow count to ten then slowed it down to idle, picked up the rod and started to straight wind. Gottemon!

It was a bit challenging to keep the fish off the corner, the boat going ahead straight and wind on the fish at the same time. There were a few sketchy moments but I got him laid out on the starboard side planing to the surface in about five minutes. Now I had him in gaffing range and took a one handed shot. Stuck him mid body and he went nuts. I didn't like the shot but I carefully tried to put him on. Nope, gaff ripped right out. Surprisingly the fish calmed down for a split second after reentering the water and I managed to stick him in the throat on the second shot. He was now in the boat!

I finally caught my first ever wahoo! Solo and in November. Took some quick GoPro photos, threw the fish in the kill bag with some ISW (iced salt water) and headed in. What an awesome day. Weather was perfect and seas were calm all the way in. wahoo1.jpg wahoo.jpg
