I decided to plan a trip to BOLA in my Cessna 182. I am brand new to ocean fishing and was hoping to get into some good fish. After reading on here I decided BOLA was going to give me a good chance. After many recommendations on here I was hoping to hook up with Rafa Cuevas.
Departed Redlands 8/28 at 1:00 pm after customs in San Felipe, landed BOLA about 5:00pm. After getting taxi they called Rafa on radio and we were able to schedule next 2 days with him.
Started out 5am catching bait, then out to a spot and bam yellow tail in first 30 seconds of fishing. Tons of yellow tail and some bass. Rafa said we hooked into a huge Black Sea bass but because of inexperience we couldn’t keep it out of the rocks and broke off 100lb line. Overall was a great trip and really enjoyed Rafa and could not recommend him more. Thank you everyone for your reports and advice on here otherwise I would have never had the confidence or knowledge to take on such a great adventure.
Oh and to top trip off we made it over to swim with the whale sharks!!

Great first trip. Rafa was the first guide that took me fishing in BOLA way back in '84. He was just starting his guide service, he borrowed an aluminum boat to take me and my family out and like they say the rest is history. Been going back every year since then.
Thanx for the report.

Hi Stephen, my uncle has a house in BOLA, and goes down several times a year. He drives it from Lompoc, and I’ve been looking for someone who might want to “ride share” with me in their private plane. I’d drive it with him, but he goes for weeks at a time (he’s retired)
and I usually just can’t get away from work for as long as he’s able to go. Wonder if you’d be interested in taking a ride along with you if the timing lined up one of these days? I’d be more than happy to split the fuel
expense, etc. I live here in California, Fresno area, so getting to So Cal isn’t difficult. Give it some thought?
