Took my boat out offshore today after getting comfortable with it in the kelp and Coronado islands. 21 foot triumph with a Yamaha OX66 150. Boat did great.

Conditions were really flat and smooth today, couldn't ask for better weather. Saw a massive humpback whale, some false killer whales and tons of smaller dolphin pods.

We hit the S 9 and trolled down to the 439 area looking for kelp paddies (we were spearfishing), stopped on one but it just had a bunch of bait fish under it. Found a good paddy about a mile east of the 302 and jumped in. My buddy immediately plugged a decent, probably 8ish pound yellowtail. I headed over to assist and saw two more off in the distance, tried everything I could to get them to come closer but they were pretty gun shy after the first. Took a couple shots at em before they disappeared. They wouldn't take surface irons, kinda weird.

Saw about 7 or so more small paddies working up to the 226 but all held bait fish only or very very small baby yellows, either fry or less than a foot long so we left em alone. All in all a solid day out there, wish I could have gone further west or south like the other recent reports, but I had a bit of range anxiety.

Go get em. Oh, my sounder had the water at 64 to 65, seemed a bit warm to me?

Haha I hear you, anxiety meaning range for for boat. I am getting 1.5nmpg and I have a 70 gal tank. I charted us a 60 to 65 mile course round trip just to make sure we had enough reserve to get back.

Wow, that is incredibly low MPG for such a light 21' boat and keeps you so limited. Check for some deals on 4 strokes in the next year or so and see if you can score..you should be able to push 3mpg and push your range much farther.

    I just switched to a Suzuki 200 HP 4 stroke on a heavy parker 2110 and I'm getting 3.4..

Good stuff though I'm a spearo too.

Thanks, yeah I'm disappointed by the mileage too but I think a 4s is out of my range with 2 kids in daycare. One day I'll get there, plenty of stuff I can get at in my 80 miles of range or so

What's your top speed and wide open throttle RPM? Maybe you need a different prop next 10 minutes. I had a triumph 21 with a 115 Yami on the back and could go to Clemente island and run way more than an 80-mile day.

I've had it over 5,000 only rarely and I was hitting 30 to 32mph. I generally cruise around 3800rpm at around 19 to 22mph. I've taken about 10 trips around la jolla, coronados, etc. I return figures in the 1.5 to 1.8 range. Remember this is a 20 year old 2 stroke. Prop is pretty beat up though, it's an east coast boat and the previous owner definetly drug the prop through the sand. Could a prop make that much difference?

Sounds good numbers. Sometimes I miss my 03 210. We did catch a good soaking coming back.

Force feeding the YT the long iron, fine job! Thanks for the report. Good for you on taking your time to get comfortable before going the distance.

Exactly! We bring a couple of 5 gallon gas cans when pushing distances offshore on a 21' cc for a little piece of mind. Pour them in when at the grounds and strap the empty jugs to the T-top or bow with ratchet type straps so they are out of the way.

I would cut your mileage in half to be safe. Coming or going into a strong current and wind will change your nmpg so fast, your head will spin and your out their calling V.A to bring you fuel. Other factors to also consider, weight on boat of fuel, passengers, Driving around, etc. It may pencil out for you in a perfect world.
