Aloha... quick report before my wife gets after me to help put the kids to sleep. Ran out to try our luck today. Been pretty slow lately, but my friend Eric agreed to go fishing with me for the first time on the new boat, so had to try! We head out of Kaunakakai at 5:30am to our spot and Eric is talking about us having some Filipino luck going for us (me and him both part Filipino). Anyway, we're doing our thing at our spot pulling in small shibis and mahis already feeling lucky when I see something bombing about 1/2 mile away. Decide we better check it out and as we get near we see a big pod of puka heads working hard. Put out one purple moldcraft on a 50 and get in front of them. Not 2 minutes into the first pass and the reel goes off. 20-minutes later and we have an ahi in the boat. This is the first ahi on my newly rebuilt boat and honestly the first ahi for me on one of my own boats, so big smiles all day. I have no idea what it weighed. Couldn't fit in my fish bag, so we cut the head and tail off and it BARELY fit end to end in the 150qt cooler. Anyway, mahalo ke akua because this was definitely an unexpected catch for December! Stoked!!!
