Aloha from Lahaina Harbor, Maui, Hawaii. The tunas continue to hang around the buoys along with a few scattered mahis. More billfish have moved into the waters of Maui county since the last report. The shortbill spearfish bite was red hot for a few days, with boats getting as many as 8 bites in a short period of time. The following photos show some of Start Me Up's recent anglers and their catch.

A 54 lb shortbill spearfish is a trophy catch.
This one isn't as big, but a 36 lb spearfish is still a quality fish.

A little rain on the way back to the harbor didn't dampen anyone's spirits. Scott and Linda were satisfied with their catch.
These anglers picked up some mahis and tunas at the buoy and then got a couple more mahis on the troll.
The afternoon bite was pretty good to these guys. They caught an ono and missed a small marlin.
K buoy produced a pair of nice mahis. The other mahi bit a trolled lure.
Another nice mahi came up at K buoy. This 41 lb bull inhaled a live shibi.
Cow mahis are usually a little smaller than the bulls. The nice cow on the end of the rack weighed in at 39 lbs.

The tuna bite was fast and furious, but only lasted for a short period of time. A quick dozen were in the fish bag before the sun came up.
The bite slowed down but there was a nicer one in mix. That 36 lb shibi put up a good fight on light standup tackle.
Once again, the tuna bite lasted for a set period of time. These anglers brought their A game and took full advantage of the flurry.
The trolling bite was great off Lanai. These lucky anglers caught a spearfish and missed a few more. The highlight of the day was a 141 lb ahi.
These ladies couldn't wait to show off their catch.
Gambling on a different buoy paid off in a big way. The 25 lb bigeye tunas bit first and then the slightly smaller ones came up. The fish were left biting.
Most of the tunas caught recently have been in the 10 to 20 lb range. Once in a while, with a little luck, some tunas in the 40 to 50 lb range end up on the boat.

When you spend time on the water, you're bound to see some amazing things. On this occasion, a rare Hawaiian monk seal swam right up to the boat while we were catching opelu for bait.

Thanks for checking out this Start Me Up fishing report. Until next time, tight lines.

    Aloha,
    Jonny

Every year is different. You never know what will be happening ahead of time. Stop by the harbor and see what's coming in.

Thanks for the positive replies everyone.

    Aloha,
    Jonny
