Just thought I would share my experience with the Okuma Andros 5. I fished a 6 day and a 7 day trip last month. The Blue fin, Yellow fin and Yellowail, proved a good test for these power house little reels. In my book, the number one thing is how light these reels are. Just 15 Oz. I got 300 yards of 50 Lb. braid and 25 yards of mono on top. The get plenty of drag, 15 at strike and 24 at full if want, and they cast like a dream. I had no problem boating Blue fin to 70 pounds and another passenger boated a 134 pound Blue fin on his Andros. My go-to rig was the Andros 5, A Super Seeker 670, and 40 Lb. Soft Steel Ultra. A very light and powerful outfit that I could fish all day. Take a look.

I just picked up one for myself. Spooled it up the same way as you did. Looking forward to using it on my six day latter on this month. This will be the first time I've used a 2sp. of any kind so it will be a learning experience for me. Knowing when to shift gears is going to be interesting to say the least. Did you feel out gunned casting that small of a reel into boiling Bluefin?

You guys sure you only got 300 yards? It's supposed to take about 420 yards of 50# to the brim. I loaded both of mine by hand off a bulk spool, so I don't know how many yards, assumed about 400 yards.
I have mine on a GUSA 65XH. Weighs about what an old 20# combo would weigh, but pulls like a mofo.

Not enough line capacity, though enough drag to do the job on a bigger fish. I got spooled on a 70+ size BFT on my Andros on a July 2012 trip on the Excel. The captain told us to leave out a 30# rig for the trip home and we ran into some larger grade BFT. I had left my "go to" Andros out and got spooled almost immediately. Needless to say, I only use this reel on a smaller yellow tail bite, or on smaller grade YFT if I am pretty sure that there are no bigger ones around at the specific stop. If the big boys are out there, even if they are not immediately biting, I no longer use my Andros.

I put 40 or 60 hollow on all my reels, except the older ones with 65# solid, and change out top shots, so almost any reel can handle 30-50# class situations. My favorite reels are any of the smaller avet raptors, I use an sx loaded with 350 yds or so of JB 40# hollow for most situations. Super lite and plenty of drag. That's good for fish to #100 or so. My other is a stella 8k on an ugly stik tiger, with about 300 yds of 40# hollow. Good for casting light baits and plenty of drag, up to #30 or so. Good for fish to #60 without problem, but I've tempted fate on fish to #86. Never been to the spool on either except on one of those long BFT soaks. Then its time to move to a bigger reel.

I love my Andros 5II, it is a great little reel that is much more capable than its size may imply. That said, once the bigger models start showing up, I'd be much more comfortable with my Mak 10sea. Its drag and gearing is much less likely to leave one out gunned.

30lb is for fishing the bait barge. Other than that I see no need to fish under 40lb on the longer stuff.

Tony was the hotstick on our charter, slaying 50-70# BFT without a hiccup. Allenn Terre our JP winner got a 134# on an Andros 5II. These little reels were the BFT killers on our trip.
