With hopes of the bluefin sticking around for next year, I picked up a Fathom 40N 2 speed and I am Currently trying to pair it to a rod for Flatfalls. I narrowed it down to two rods I have found great deals on and if any of you have experience with either I’d appreciate the feed back: Okuma PCH Railrod XXH and Phenix Axis 720X2H.

Several good comments about the Okuma PCH 74XXH in older threads. Should be a great rod for flatfalls and bait.

I have that Phenix Axis and like it a lot. For your consideration, Graftech is also now making some excellent rail rods for less than $200.

I have the same reel in the Torque line. You are going to enjoy fishing it, that size of reel just feels very good in your hands.

I fish a Phenix axis 780X2H on my fathom 40 and it is a very nice rod. Same rod as the one you listed only 6” longer.

Speaking for the Axis, I'd go up a bit. The X2H is great for 60lb, and can still fish 80 decently, but you're pretty deep into the backbone by then. I'd go with the X3H, that's really where you're getting into a rod that can actually do the job.

The issue with that is the the fathom 40n, which is the reel he is matching it with, fishes 60lb best but can stretch it to 80.

Totally, I just didn't want to be a complete dick. But I agree, you really want something like a Mak 20. 600 yards of true 100lb, and if the last 150y of that are 130 even better.

I appreciate all the input and feedback guys, thank you.
And yes I am aware a Mak 20 or VISX20 is ideal for this application, but these are out of my price range.

Totally understandable. What is your budget? Not that cool, but you'd probably be better off with something like a TLD instead, or even a Fathom 60.
