I'm doing a 7-day on the Royal Star late September. I've got a 12vsx. Should I add a 16 or 30 to my collection? I picked up the 12 after I had an unexpectedly large tuna turn the drag on a borrowed Trinidad into mush - thinking the 12 can probably allow me to get in a tuna up to 150-pounds or so. I emailed the boat too on this and I bet they'll get back to me. Thanks for advice...

a 16 or 30 is pretty big for a 7 day trip. If open to something else - get a hx raptor

On a 7-day trip, a 30VSW would generally only see service as a trolling reel, or possibly for the less-common application of kite fishing on a 7-day, and a 30VSX would not see a lot of application.
A 16VSX would get a pretty good workout [same line capacity as referenced HX] with either a 60 or 80-pound topshot, generally over 80 or 100-pound braid.
I love the 16VSX on Alijos and Guadalupe-grade tuna when using "big baits" like greenback mackerel and squid, and of course when dropper-looping for big yellowtail and even possibly grouper at the Ridge.

Hx avet will do everything you want it to do on a 7 day trip

16VSX holds about 700 yards of 80-pound braid with a very short topshot.

Get a 16VSX great reels, 30 size drag, an lower gear 1.7 vs 2.4 "HX". Had an Avet HX no comparison in the drag even the Raptor. The only issue I personally have with the 12VSX is the 2.5 low gear. Really limits what size fish you can go after. I was out at Cal's today, I believe he is developing a 2/0 low gear for the 12. A 16VSX on a 7465M great combo.

Go with the 16vsx, I have it spooled with hollow core 80lb tst.
Change out your T/S when needed, here in NJ Iv'e caught plenty
of YFT with it, granted they are not the hogs you guys catch.
    16 VSx should do you.

    Catch em up
