Interesting. I have never received frozen fish back on any boat, I guess none of them have real rsw
All of the long range boats do. It squirts a frozen salt water brine onto your catch. The fish is chilled to about 35゚ which makes it harder than cardboard. Because I've ridden the shogan on a long range trip, I do know they have and use it. Real RSW is not freshwater ice thrown into a hold which only cools your catch.

I have been on probably half of the boats or more in San Diego and have never received frozen fish back. Ice cold and firm but not frozen.

Then you don't know what real RSW is. I've driven back to Las Vegas with RSW fish and they are still frozen when I get home.

All the Cattle boat day trips, 2 day trips, Care about is the catch count. They don't give a rat's ass about the quality of your catch when you get off the boat

The only trips I have been on longer than overnight were private charters. Yeah fish will probably freeze in an rsw after several days, but we're talking about a 2 day trip here in my original post, so to say that boats have an rsw because the fish wasn't frozen is silly.

If they're using real RSW the fish will freezie in about 20 minutes or less

    I know a couple guys...
I've had so called "RSW held" fish come off Sporties that tasted a little too fishy for me. Totally a bummer cause the meat is a treat! Hope the OP tries some of the options and reports back with what worked best. He has enough meat and nothing to lose as it's already likely a lost cause.

For what it is worth... Every single bluefin I have caught has been delish and this is coming from a guy that is not accustomed to fishy flavor. Truthfully, it tastes almost identical to Yellowfin, Bonito, and even Skipjack to me. Different textures, but taste is similar (yummy).

It seems like such a shameful waste to chunk with it, feed cats, or put in the garden as a result of poor care. Better than tbrowing it the garbage I suppose. I'd offer to take it off these guys hands but I'm thinking it's probably poorly cared for and if that is true... No Thanks!!!

I will admit I caught fish that was in the freezer too long and it was used for chunk or lobster bait. I'm learning to take less, or give more away to avoid that waste.

Here is what has worked for me... Catch it, spike it, put it in the kill bag with ice. When you have a few minutes, gill/gut it, pack cavity with ice and put back in the kill bag.

For the ride home (2 hours), I try to keep it whole but if I cant...I loin it up (keep the loins big). Keep the loins on ice, keep as dry as possible, and process that night (important). Otherwise, I keep the whole fish packed on ice, keep it on ice overnight, process the firm fish the next morning.

I used to throw out completely good fish (Bonito and Skipjack especially) too, before I knew how to properly care for it. Ice is your friend, bring more than you think you need. We end up wasting a lot of it if we have a tough day, but I've never had private boat caught fish taste fishy.

Yeah in Thailand they really try not to waste food and with their command of herbs, spices and flavors, they have specialized methods of making even some of the less prime cuts edible or even delicious. My wife makes the most amazing pacific mackerel curry flavored fried fish cakes too
Mind sharing the recipes? I love Thai red curry and Pad Pirk King.

She's got most of the recipes in her head but I could ask her. Honestly it might be easier to look them up because she's not really a "by the recipe" kind of chef at all. I agree Thai red curry and pad prik king are also a couple of my favorites but I have too many favorites lol. Her friend made some really good pad prik king the other day with fried snakehead fish. I feel like a really lucky guy having a wife who can cook this type of stuff.

She usually sends me with some tasty Thai snacks whenever I go fishing to share with whoever takes me out on their boat

ice will drop the temperature of saltwater down to something like 25 degrees, which is cold enough to semi-freeze most ocean fish (but not, for example, squid, because of its high ammonia content). I don't think any fish is going to freeze at 35 degrees.

I don't believe that is correct.
RSW (refrigerated sea water) does NOT freeze fish if the temperature is properly set. The temperature is set just above the freezing temperature of the salt water. In this case approximately -2 degrees C.

I've had fish in RSW for 10 days and still not frozen. That's why you can get sashimi/sushi grade fish when you get to the landing.

Smaller boats do have RSW. Many have Spray Brine systems where the fish are constantly sprayed with the brine solution to keep them cool, but not submerged in salt water. I never checked on the temperature of the brine solution, but it's COLD.

Only a few boats still have the "Model 10 Sack Air Conditioning System". That's where when the boat is going 10 mph, the wet sacks on deck keep to fish cool.

In full transparency I have never placed a piece of fish in the ground including rose gardens. That sounds like work and I typically try to avoid that.

Apparently some were triggered by the horrific thought. Those folks need to relax and not take things so seriously. You might live longer....

I buried the trimmings of my fish from my trip, no waste.
