Wanting a bigger boat
Just got back from the #excelsportfishing 2.5 day trip, and couldn’t have asked for a better trip or crew. It was personally my first time aboard the ship but I’ll be back. I believe we had approximately 150bluefij 18-107lbs, and 60 YT.

Day one started off with the boat about 10 miles west of Ensenada, lots of kelps and YT but no bluefin around. We fished and searched around all day until hit that one school at night and it was near if not wide open all you wanted 60lb Bluefin tuna, I went 1 for 5 on my 60lb outfit.

Day two, Captain Justin had informed us the night before that we were going to move up towards San Clemente and that we did, along with the fleet. We were joined by the American angler, Searcher, and a bunch of other boats. We spent all morning searching and picked 3 or 4 off total, then the weather came up about 2:00. By then the private boat fleet scattered and the larger boats were the only ones around. By 8:00, we had started our legitimate search for that one school, and after 2 stops we found it and made a drift on it for about 3-4hours of non stop fish between 15 and 100lbs. We pulled over 100 bluefin on the one stop, one of which was my fish at 107lbs. By the end of the night we had called in the game changer and handed off biting BFT.

Overall this trip was one for the books, wide open night time jig fish that actually wanted to play, and the excel sure fit its name.

Great to see your smiling face, Logan. Congratulations on winning the JP! Tell us what went wrong, 1 for 5 on the 60 lb. Maybe something we can learn.

what went wrong was just bad hook sets, broken hooks, and no mono topshot in rough weather so pulled hooks. I broke 2 off due to hooks, the barbs broke off. (They were owner mutu circle hooks 1/0 but may have got old)

I ask because I went 0 for 1 on a trip. Drag too tight too soon, 3X Mustad hook opened up like a paper clip!

Tugboat 64, thanks for a very good report. it was an awesome trip and I enjoyed sharing the rail with you. I wold add that a too heavy drag setting resulted in pulled hooks and not having adequate size hooks and located at each of these bigger flat fall resulted in missed bites. These fish are also keying in on smaller flat falls. 120 to 250 grams. And don't forget the heavy leaders.

Thanks for the report and pics. Timing is everything on catching and you hit it!
Ive heard the galley has really stepped it up on the XL. They have two newer chefs, TJ & Mike that are taking the cuisine to a new level!
