I know a lot of you guys are going to jump me on this but I need to report to the forum my experience last night.

This is our 7th year hooping on the big bay and every year we buy several full scoops of sardines to chop and fill our bait tubes throughout the six month season. This has happened many times and I know what to expect when I pay $35 for a full scoop and I always leave a $5 tip. What I usually get is a nice five gallon bucket with more than enough bait to fill my 20 tubes. I usually have 2 one gallon ziplock bags of unchopped sardines remaining that I freeze and use on the next trip.

Last night my 42 year old nephew got the bucket filled and he paid. When he came back to the boat I looked at it and remarked "That's a full scoop?" he said yes. It looked short. We moved and chopped and filled tubes and we came up short. Not even enough to fill all 20 tubes. I'd say that short of weighing what they give you, filling tubes gives you a pretty accurate idea of the size of the scoop.

So here's where Everingham Brothers let me down last night. I went back up to the two young guys working and said that they had shorted me. They got excited and told me to leave as well as saying that I got what I paid for. We went back and forth and the only way these guys were going to add more sardines to my bucket was if I paid them $25. The subject of calling the boss came up and I was all for it but alas he didn't answer. A second try was made and still no answer. So I tell these guys that I'd like to know their names because this wasn't the end to this. They both refused to give me their names. When I was leaving the shorter guy with a buzz cut called me a fucking asshole.

I got home around 1am and sent an email to [email protected] but haven't yet got a response. I want you guys to know that I usually am not a complainer. When something as obvious as this happens I just have to say something though. They should have just added enough sardines to my bucket so I could fill all 20 of my tubes and I would have left happy. Instead I'm writing this flaming post on Bloody Decks which is something I'd rather not have to do.

Lastly, The bait barge has a monopoly on live bait here and from my experience with them last night, they know it.

You know that it's always arbitrary when they scoop the bait. It's not accurately measured like like at a seafood market. I understand that variations can happen. I think Everingham Brothers needs to either weigh every scoop they sell or at least when a customer comes back with a complaint of a short scoop, error on the side of customer satisfaction and not call their customers bad names. You also need to know that at least I did get back the $5 tip.

Yeah, I hate when that happens. Why just yesterday I went to my favorite place to get a pastrami combo with zucchini, and lo and behold, the f*cking price went up over a dollar and I swear the zucchini portion was smaller. I'm a regular enough customer that they know my order when I walk up to the counter and when I mentioned the price/size difference the owner said "our portions were too big compared to the competition" and "we saw a lot of food being tossed in the trash" (tru dat, I usually take half of the sandwich and a lot of leftover zucchini with me).

What's this got to do with EB? Absolutely nothing, but I like the place where I get my pastrami, the price is still fair and the quality is good, and I'll take that over mediocre quality/lower price/larger portions.

In my experience if you want another pass at the receiver its no big deal, just ask. They want to please. But if you drive away and fish then come back it probably looks to them like you must have thought it was cool at the time too so what's the beef. It's not weighed out. It's a judgment call. If the customer agrees at the time, then it wasn't short, which is what happened here.

Serious Q: when it was clear they weren't buying your story, did you become an AH? If they were talking to you that way would you call them an AH to shut it down? Once the tone escalates, shit happens. They're just people who work incredibly hard for shit wages and in shit conditions like everybody else. Act like you're special because you bought a scoop and they probably do want to tell you to FO. When I go there and let them know how much I appreciate them and treat them with genuine respect, they go out of their way to do favors. Stand out for being cool. With the shit they see every day it takes very little effort.

Any suggestion by another party that it should come to blows is dumb. You do that, you go to the can, for sure and then your short scoop will cost you thousands, a record and a few days picking up trash. You seriously injure them you'll do time. Put that shit away. This isn't Jr. High. Men fight, people can die and for that reason the courts don't put up with it.

Let it go. It's just fishing. If you're that pissed off, buy salmon heads next time.

No one serious is going to jump on EB because one guy thinks he got a short scoop. You wouldn't either.

Let me make this more clear for Larmo. We never left the bait dock. We moved to the south end where we always do to chop and fill the tubes before we even start fishing for bugs. No, I wasn't an asshole. I approached them nicely but they would hear nothing of it. You're right, I didn't get violent or even use foul language like they did. I simply had a problem and wanted it fixed. What I got in return was poor customer service and name calling. Let's see if Everingham bothers to answer my email or comment in this thread. I know they are a family run business with a long history here. I also know that they are the only game in town and that several of you guys are scared to say anything for fear of being black balled by them. It's pretty simple. Give a guy what he pays for. If he complains, make it right. As a business you're better off in the long run. This is coming from a 57 year old native San Diegan with a large local family. I didn't just arrive in my motor home last week and start stirring the shit.

It is funny, I have been given a scoop that seemed preaty accurate, and I have been given a scoop where I have to tell them to stop because it is way more than I need. I have never been short. It would have been nothing for them to give you another net full or so to make you happy. They are the only game in town, but if it was not for us fisherman they would not have a business. It has been a long season. I am so tired, between working and going out fishing because this is the best sean ever. I dont even have anymore excuses to tell my wife why I am going fishing I have been out so much. But i remain to be my professional self. Fuck thoes little bitches on the bait barge. Someone calls me an ass hole they are going to find my spring line around there neck. I am super tough on the computer. Lol, but seriously call the company and let them know that you are not happy with the way you were treated. and remind them a scoop of bait just caused them a shit load of bad props on BD. And we are all there customers here in so cal. Good luck and keep us informed on how it turnes out.

You and me both then - we're rare anymore. I still say just let it go.

My adage is, "You're only as big as what is capable of pissing you off." Short scoops don't get me going and I am an AH who fucks so being called one doesn't either.

Just a thought for what its worth.

BTW, thanks for the entertainment this am. Girlfriend has her BFF in town and this is my only respite. Boards were boring until you posted short scoop drama.

Wish we could use cast nets for bait like Northern CA. I do not know why DFG has that restriction on SO Cal. Either way, let it go and just be happy that sometimes we get more than what we pay for.

Few weeks ago I stopped on the way in for straight macks to fill my receiver without having to make them. Paid for a 1/2 and they filled the tank until I said stop. Very cool. Gave the other $20 in a tip to pay it forward. Another time in August I was making macks nearby they waved me in and tied me up opposite the box they were unloading from. Made them in 3s and 4s until we were done in just a fraction of the time it would have taken. And it's not like I'm a huge customer. I rarely buy bait and my tank can't hold more than 1.5 scoops tops.

I have bought bait at MB, SD bay, and Oceanside all within the last few weeks - basically fished every weekend. Oceanside charges $50 for what the others charge $35. What I get ALWAYS varies at each of the 3 barges. I always tip up front to try and persuade a good tank fill, and I ALWAYS come down from the bridge and check what I got prior to leaving. If it looks light I respectfully ask for more and they typically hook me up with no problem. I guess like everything you just gotta double check that you are getting what you pay for.

Unfortunately the immature youngster chose the wrong words, and they could have just taken your word for it to keep a customer happy. If they recognize you as a repeat offender, I can see the obvious dispute, but we're taking about another couple gallons of sardine for pete's sake. It's not like you were gone for 4 hours and came back, it sounds like you returned fairly quickly.

By the way, didn't someone say tips are supposed to be between 30 & 50% ??? That's probably what happened!

There have been times when I felt like I got a bonus scoop. No doubt. Last night I needed to fill 20 bait tubes and couldn't. Lots of times I let things go but last night I didn't. I've heard stories of the large boats (Condor) getting a load of bait, then return and dump it because it was crappy. I just wanted what was due me, nothing more. I could have come on here telling a story of how the guys were looking at porn and the place smelled like pot but that didn't happen. I only reported to you guys what REALLY happened and nothing more. I think the truth is bad enough.

Asking for a weighed out scoop is a bad idea. You think you got shorted ? wait until you see what a scoop is weighed. You will probably find out you have been getting more than a scoop for a long time. You also have now let it be known to the bait guys that you are a whiner. They will remember you ! you screwed yourself and probably others too.The bait guys have been generous if they have been filling a 5 gallon bucket for 35 bucks.Asking for the tip back, bad idea !
