finds an acorn every once in a while...

With the winds supposedly picking up this weekend, but still logging to get on the the water, I decided to make a quick trip to Izor's, hopefully, for some C&R bass & barracuda fishing, anything other than rockfish or sculpin, lol. Brought a reduced arsenal and actually left pretty late, launching at Huntington Harbor around 8 am.

Uneventful trip out of the harbor and motored up to 20kts heading due south for Izor's in a bigger chop than usual for the morning hours. About a mile short of Izor's, saw a flock of birds diving in the water and with bait boiling on the surface. Perhaps cuda or maybe yellows? Slid in & threw a red flake swim bait (the only thing I had rigged) into the boil for seemingly nothing. Let out some line, reel in a few feet, repeat. After a few seconds I got picked up. Knew it was a bigger model of something as it started taking line against 8 lbs of drag.

Definitely not a 'cuda. Yellow? It sure didn't seem to fight like one. The first time I got it up near the surface, it was gray or silver... I'm thinking small shark?

Nope... not a shark. After a couple of trips around the boat and it I was able to stick the gaff in it. I'm still in disbelief! 48" & 35 lbs on the handheld scale. Rather pleasant surprise when all you were expecting were some bass.

No ice on board (originally targeting C&R calico's & sandies), so it was back to the harbor to ice down the catch. Back at the dock before 10 am (but not done cleaning the boat & fish til almost 2, lol).

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Wow! From zero expectations to being a hero! You da man. Now you have to leave late & don't take any ice from now on. Don't want to mess with your system.

Not quite... a BH I think, although with all the fish k-man and company put on board, I might have to give it a go.
