Figure I will start looking at my setups now so I have time to add/delete from arsenal. Here’s what I got gear wise, but being 4+ months away obviously I won’t know exact details of fishing but want to cover everything from 15lb to 60lb with my gear and rent beyond that into the 80lb/100lb/kite setups. While the fishery now is 60-100lb rigs mostl, September might be a lot of smaller game action mixed in too.
please give opinions. TIA 👍
here’s what I can muster right now and how I would deploy

1. avet SXJ 5.3 mc / 15-25lb uses / 40 lb braid with misc flouro leaders. on Lamiglass inshore 7’6” 15-30lb
2. Diawa SL30sh / 20-30 lb uses / 30 Lb mono / light surface iron, jig, and bait. On a Shimano Tallus blue water 8’ 40-80lb braid rod.
3. Diawa Lexa 400 8.1.to 1 / 50lb braid to 40 lb flouro leader / light iron, snipers, poppers, bait. On a Calstar 690j 20-50lb
4. Penn 500/Tib frame with new drags/ 25-40lb use / iron, light jigs, bait, backup 40lb iron on 690j or Shimano Tallus 7’ 40-80lb
5. Penn 113H yellowtail special with new drags/ 40-60lb use / jigs, deep iron, large bait / on a unknown custom 6‘ 30-60lb rod
6. Penn Fathom 30 star drag / 30-50lb use / 65 lb braid with misc flouro topshot / on either Tallus 7’ 40-80 or seeker blk stl 25-40lb
7. Avet MXL 2sp / 25-40lb use / 65lb braid with 25-40lb flouro/ bait and snipers/ on a Califonian calico special 8’ 15-40lb
8. Penn Fathom 30 LD2 / 40lb to 60lb use / 65lb braid to 30-60lb flouro or longer mono top shots / Graftech 40(50)60lb offshore 7‘8”
9, Avet HX 5/2 2sp / 40-80lb use / sinker, jigs, lrg bait / 80 lb hollow braid to 40-80 flouro leaders / need 60-80lb rod (suggestions?)

other rods availabl and considered are
Trulines 6’3” TNT 30-50 lb and 7’ Dynamo 1x7c 10-80lb
Old school Sabre 20-50lb 6’

well that’s what I got
what I don’t got is $$ for much more than 60-80lb budget rod ( ie: Graftechs) Looking at Graftech 50-100 lb Rail rod series

let me have the lowdown 😎👍👍 be gentle.

Clearly you have it all planned out. Don't bother with a kite set up boats covers that. Flat fall/knife jigs have been the ticket for bigger tuna. The 50-100 rod you are looking for or a 1X3 equivalent or better with 100 braid is what you should look for. Good luck !

On a Penn trip, there should be plenty of loaner gear to fill in any gear gaps you may have.

You have enough. Since it’s a Penn sponsored trip, check with the charter master and see what loaner gear he’s bringing. Let him/her know you need to borrow a heavy outfit. Good luck and have FUN.

Congratulations on having a garage-full of toys to play with! Like TOTW said, you should be able to try different Penn outfits on the boat, so the first thing to do is decide which FOUR outfits you will take. You won't need more than that with the boat handling the kite gear and with lots of loaner outfits to play with.

Your SXJ on the Lamiglas should be perfect for small lures or bait if the fish are fussy (likely) or if the kelp paddy yellowtail and dorado are what the boat has stopped on. If the fish are bigger, your Lexa 400 rig is what you will want to have in hand.

Your Penn 113H should be on the Shimano Tallus 8foot 40-80, it will be very handy for medium-size critters.

Get a good rod for use with your HX 5/2, mine is on a Graftech GRR 78XXXH, and it will be your flat-fall or other deep drop lure outfit. On a Penn trip, you will have no need for any of your other outfits. Bring them if you want to, it is just more things to think about. Keep it simple. And I didn't see a heavy spinner on your list. When you are on the trip, make it a point to try out a big Penn spinner, they make several good ones, and see how much farther you can easily cast a tiny sardine or small lure. The past few years the fish have been really keying on very small bait if it is a surface bite.

Where the 100lb set up ? Maybe FTH60LD2... There a lot of big fish out there you will want that for night or morning fishing in the dark...

First, you won't really know until reports from August. Your HX is good for BFT up to about 150lb. For tuna that are 150 up to 350 or more, you need a legit 100 or 130lb rig. The SDS50, Mak20 or similar on a 2x4 type rod. They can be rented. You can also reach out to Steve Carson on BD and ask us 100lb loaner is available.

You may try Amazon too....also if price is not so much a factor...also worth checking out are the United Composites RGP80 TERMINATOR or the RGP76 PREDATOR for this application....call Jamie or Sal at Bob Sands Tackle Shop if you getvthe chance.

As noted, the boat will have kite gear totally covered.
I'll have a decent number of "loaners", but not a huge quantity of any one thing.
Most numerous will be Fathom FTH40NLD2's with 80-pound braid on 60-80 rods [topshot TBD], along with some 12VISX's and 16VISX's.
Be sure to PM me shortly before the trip if you want spinning gear [6000-8000 size] otherwise I don't bring a whole lot of it.
Also PM me near departure if you want to try specific lighter gear like FTH15LD2's etc.

Very Cool !!. I will give you a shout out before the trip a couple weeks out and give a heads up if im needing a loaner. the 40ld2 and or visx would be awesome to play with on some big ones fo sho. My Avet HX 5/2{non raptor} obviously wont compare to the drags of those bad boys.
    gonna be awesome.
    thanks Tunanorth.
