Probably the Holyest Weekend of the year...

Holy Saturday 4/23, ran up to the ledge, pretty dead, reeled up and throttled out, just outside V find some porpoise so slow and deploy. Though it looked good... nada. Now what pull up and run or just troll out, just troll out.

Probably around 11am or so (and pretty good distance) see some birds (I think, but I've fooled my self before). As I get closer see a good bird pile but further out see whites and what appears to be porpoise. Pass thru the birds, the whites are another 3/4 mile or so out; interesting find, akus with plenty of birds and then a separate porpoise pile a little further outside of them.

Finally make a good pass, the port rigger goes (9" black salmon, shiroma 2 holed jet), that'll get your heart pumpin', turns out to be a nice ono.

Clean up and make another pass, this time the stbd flat line goes (9" chrome jet black salmon, same one we had the marlin on awhile back), this one aint no ono!!! Clear lines, all geared up doing battle when the hooks pulled, safe bet it was the right one, but without the critter no tellin'. Tried for awhile longer but getting late and plenty of miles between me and the harbor. Pick up a small mahi on the way back home.

Easter Sunday 4/24: How'd I pull that one off you ask?, Nerlie wanted to go, monster created! No ledge this time; headed straight back to the area... Ran for a 1/2 hour or so, probably around 7:30 the port corner goes, turns out to be another nice ono (mangled my go-to lure).

Still heading out, but in the vicinity of Saturday's bite, the stbd corner goes and comes off, no evidence to speak of so re-deploy. Maybe 10 minutes later Nerlie and I up in the tower, the stbd flat line goes (same lure, same position from Saturday) and goes it does.

Get all lines cleared, Nerlies does great at keeping the boat doing what it needs to be doing. Geared up and doing battle. The fish never really went deep, Saturday's fish did. So in the back of my mind thinking marlin the whole time. For three reasons, didn't see any porpoise, too early for a blind strike and don't want to be thinking ahi only to get my hopes dashed against the rocks when it turns out to be a marlin.

We did keep the boat in gear which we wouldn't do if we were convinced it was an ahi. She came in fairly easy; there was no doubting what it was once I saw color, Nirvana! Took the gear off and put the rod in the rod holder once leader was up, leadered up and stuck a gaff, Nerlie followed with a second one for good measure...

Thanks Nerlie for the pics, Captaining and gaffing.

    A belated Happy Easter everyone...
