My Christmas’s bonus is being spent on a dji mavic platinum.

For the size of it you can’t beat the picture quality. Plus it’s small enouch I can always have it with me.

I’m a research nerd and have been really torn on which one to get but after watching my buddies mavic in action in the sierras last weekend I know have to have one.

i have a yuneec q500 4k. i got the one in the nice aluminum case. i've tried planes, helicopters, other cheaper drones, all ending in a rapid deceleration event from which repairs were not feasible.
then a buddy showed up with his q500.......what a difference!!!! its very stable, no way to crash it unless you hit something. gps stabilized so you can just put the controler down and walk away.....it will hover right where you left it. has a rabbit and turtle mode.
has "smart mode" meaning it doesnt matter which way the drone is facing, you stick to the right, it goes to your right.
"angle mode" you stick right....it goes to "its right" this is the harder way to fly but you'll like it once you get used to it.
    camera....4k
    takes amazing video and stills.
my "kit came with a "wizard". you can control drone from it, but nostly used to follow you around. its about the size of a magic marker, so if you want it to keep a distance from you and follow you it will follow the wizard.
this is a great deal.... same as mine. look on you tube, a ton of videos there. if you want a hot dog racing stunt drone this is not for you. if you want one you can fly right out of the box, hand it off to the wife and let her fly this is it.
its also worth noting that yuneec has its office out of so cal.. ontario i think. go to a hobby shop that sells and uses them and talk. DJI spends alot of money to keep their name out there.

Depends on how much money you (your wife) wants to spend but I would go with a DJI Phantom

Well, DJI is currently the leader in drones at the moment.

The hot new drone right now is the DJI Mavic Pro Aerial Camera. It's currently on sale at Costco for a pretty smoking price. I have NO firsthand experience with this thing, but I have heard lots of rave reviews on this newest DJI drone...... it's said to be pretty damn badass and very easy to use!!

    Here is a review......

This is a little OT, but, I was in a similar quandary until I started researching the venues where I wanted to use the drone. I'm not sure how the laws may differ in Cali, but, I found in Hawaii, drones are not allowed in National Parks and most state parks. Also, the state requires drones operating in state parks to be operated within line of sight. As far as I know, my resident county, the County of Hawaii, has not even addressed the question. Unless I get a helluva deal, I'm waiting until I know I've got some options to use a drone. Hopefully, you've considered this angle and have more options than me.

So long as your present drone is cool with you going fishing, golf, shooting etc. I’d keep her.
Finding and breaking in a new one is costly, frustrating and time consuming

get some and NATIVE like this.

that model is nice too, it has something like radar that helps to keep you from running into stuff with it.

Mavic is small and won't fly in as much wind.

The Phantom is a little bigger and flys in higher winds.

Both have basically the same tech otherwise. We have had phantoms and the inspire in the past. Just got the Mavic. Totally blown away by the size and performance. Really nice model.

If you plan on flying it offshore I'd probably go with the Phantom.

I ended up with the Mavic Pro. I have about 20 hours on it and it's still in 1 piece.....

and the video it shoots is pretty incredible. Once I get the editing figured out, I'll post something. :)

Stoked to hear this!! I'm thinking hard about picking one of these up at some point as well..... just have to hold off for a bit right now.

Everything I keep hearing about this Mavic pro has been really positive, so I will be curious how you feel about it after a little more fly time.

Did you do the pre flight registration, and if so was it pretty painless?

you have to register the product in order to download the firmware update. I have yet to register with FAA, but I need to do that too I guess.....
