I have been really itching to get out for some time on the water, had a buddy who’s always busy randomly become available and he had his boy. Grabbed my son and headed out of Dana around 2- weather was almost full cloudy at this point, decent winds around 10-15mph, seas were around 2-3ft.

Not the best conditions, hard to keep the little ones comfortable when drifting and tossing out a few swim baits for some spotties around the Point.

It was looking bleak on the FF, saw a few other boats bearing the chop at the point.

Decided to head back after an hour or so…. look out towards horizon and saw a water spout.

Gunned over there, about a half mile off the point I see a California Gray whale slowly cruising south.

Got the boat about 30 yards away and ran parallel to her for a good 20 mins. Whale was in such shallow water, 90-100feet.

Absolutely fantastic to share that experience with the little guys. Next time out I’m sure there will be plenty of fish for us!

I think I saw you guys headed out as I was headed in. Your kids are troopers. Building those sea legs while they are little.

We fished Salt Creek and just outside the harbor for several hours. Got tired of the wind and slop, and called it. Didn't even get a nibble.

Can't stress this enough with the little ones. Mackerel. Just get sabiki rigs and put chum out or find a bait ball. They don't care what they catch. They will super stoked vs. rocking and rolling and throwing swim baits out for fish that likely aren't going to bite.

At what point do you transition them from mackerel on sabikis to grinding in 150lb bluefin on spreader bars 😂

Well my kids were 10 this year and had 13 or so fish over a 100 this year ... So

    Yes LOL.

They've been on a boat since they were 6 months but I'm telling you starting them with mackerel was the best thing I did. Every dolphin/whale/boat ride trip we'd stop and jig a few to get them used to the tackle, what bait looks like on the meter, which side of the boat to fish and they were excited every single time.

This is very helpful, definitely have this planned for the next time!
